Any advice re: attaching chatter blades to heads with split rings?

I have been building my own chatter baits with parts I bought from Barlows. Very pleased with the baits but attaching the heads to the split rings is very difficult. I use split ring pliers I bought from Texas Tackle (I think that's the name) and am using #3 split rings. Any help will be appreciated.

The Barlow's #3 split rings are a little small for easy installation on those baits. I install the split ring in the blade first, then into the hook eye. I ended up buying some #3 split rings from Hagen's and they were a little bigger and easier to install.
