    Question regarding rod finish . . .

I've noticed that when I'm fishing in the rain, the finish on my fishing rods turns a milky white color. It remains this way until the fishing rods become dry in the sun. Any idea what is happening and what can be done to prevent this?

From the description you gave it sounds like your getting moisture(condensation) under the finish.
Take a close look at the edge of the finish where it meets the blank. Try to see if there is a gap between the two at that point. You could take a extremely thin piece of shim material(feeler gauge) and "CAREFULLY" see if it will slide under the epoxy edge. If there is a gap there my suggestion is once you know that the areas are completely free of moisture. You can take a hair dryer and run it back and fourth over the guidewraps.(Do not put the hair dryer too close to the rod!) to make sure its dry. Then take a fine piece of scotchbrite pad and slightly scuff the "EPOXY" only.(you must do this so that the new coat will bond.) Then apply a light coat of finish over the original finish making sure you extend the finish beyond the original edge. Make sure to apply the finish past both of the original edges.

If you would like to tackle this yourself you will need is some 2 part Rod Finish, a couple throwaway brushes, a scotchbrite pad and some . It would make things easier if you had some sort of motorized unit to turn the rod while the finish is drying but it is not 100% necessary as you can turn the rod by hand periodically to avoid the finish from sagging.

If after this is completed you still have the problem the rod will need to be stripped and re-wrapped.

If you have any other questions drop me an email at rb3rb@cox.net

Funny you mention that. Many of my older Production Loomis rods do this. I can tell it is not from the water getting under the finish because the spots appear in the exact shape of the drop on the finish. And when dry they dissapear.
I have not had this happen on any of my own hand made rods only on a few production rods.

Re: Question regarding rod finish . . . (Mr B)

This is only happening to a couple of my rods - a Team Diawa Flipping Rod, Berkley Air IM6 casting rod and a Fenwick GoldenWing casting rod. I will keep an eye on them to see if the spots appear in the same location. I plan to take Russ's advice and refinish the flippin rod this winter. We'll see if this helps!
