Hi Guys, just wanted to run this by the experts .. went for a ride today and while getting the bumpers and lines all set I decided to squeeze the primer bulb a few times before I launched the boat. (boat is still on trailer)
Forgot to add that the motor is a Johnson 1999 225 HO (J225HPLEEN)
Motor is tilted all the way up to avoid any nonsense when launching.... I go around the back to check the drain plug and I see some gas dripping out of the cable/hose rubber fitting (where all the hoses/steering etc go into the engine). Yikes I say to myself, lower the motor and remove cowling and I find some gasoline in the bottom of the pan if you will. Checked for any loose hoses but eveything looked fine.
I cleaned it up and launched the boat... removed the cowling and started the engine just to make sure there were no signs of gas leaking and everything looked good. Ran great for the afternoon.
Just wanted to understand what probably happened .. here's my thought ... since I had the engine tilted all the way up and then proceeded to squeeze the primer bulb a few too many times I figure that I created enough pressure for the gas to enter the carbs and overfill the bowls. Since the bowls were not level sort of speak the gas easily poured out of them into the bottom of the pan.
As I say... the engine ran great during the next 2 hours and no signs of gas were in the bottom when I put the boat back onto the trailer.
Lesson learned here was ... don't prime the bulb until you are in the water and the engine is in it's normal position and only prime until the bulb gets hard and STOP !!.
What do you think guys ... does that sound about right .. I'm guessing no harm was done.
As always Thanks in Advance
Bruce
