    What's the deal with senko's?

Hear a lot of people catch fish on them. Never caught a fish on one, but haven't fished them much. Are they best fished weightless like a fluke? Any brand favored over others?

They can be fished any way you'd use a plastic worm, but probably the most used is weightless, either T-rigged or Wacky style. I use them for skipping docks and underneath low hanging limbs. They also make a good follow-up when you get a boil on a topwater and the fish misses. As for brand, there are those who refuse to fish anything but the original. Me, I go to WalMart and pop $3/bag for YUM Dingers. Catch just as many fish for a lot less. There's lots of other knockoffs of the original out there. You might want to try something like the Strike King Ocho that's made out of ElazTech plastic. A little more expensive, but one lure will last you a LONG time.

I really like that Strike King Ocho. Every body has their thing though. Last summer I started using that Kriet Tail Worm from Big Bite Baits. It has a Senko body with a tail. I love it on ledges. You can see a pic of them, link in my signature

I like texas rigging them and using them around cover 95% of the time. A couple things are key for senkos to really shine-bass in fairly shallow water, fish not buried too deep in cover, and clearer water doesn't hurt.

Ideal senko situation for me would be fairly clear water, sunny skies, calm, springtime, spawn time and fish are relating to stumps and scattered cover. If its windy or cloudy its hard to fish a senko and reaction baits can work better at times. If fish are deep they are less effective. And if fish are in thick cover a weighted bait may work better. I have done well on senkos in dirty water but its been in really shallow water 1-3ft deep.

But you gotta be careful with senkos because like many soft plastics they will always catch some fish but sometimes you end up catching mostly small fish on them or your better off using something else that you can work faster. If you look at tournament results most big wins on senkos are in the springtime fishing around the spawn. They are a great option when fish are shallow and not locked on beds yet.

I was kidding before plain and simple the senko is the best soft plastic of all time IMO. Wacky rig, texas rigged, fished in weed, fished around docks, fished in wood. Any way you fish this will always catch fish. It is easy to catch fish on a senko put it on a owner wacky rig hook put an o-ring on it and sure enough you will catch fish. I have caught 6 7 + pounders smallies largies any fish.

Depends entirely on how you're fishing the bait. For weightless T-rigging the 5" Senko, I use a 4/0 Gamakatsu round-bend, offset-shank hook. Works great in heavy cover. For wacky rigging the same bait, my favorite is a 1/0 Owner Rig-N hook. Works great with or without the o-ring.

    Good luck!

As a drop bait the traditional yammy senko works great. For skipping docks a yum dinger is 10x better due to its slimmer profile and durability.

I'd say probably the 5" is the most popular. I'm going to try some 4" on a dropshot this year.

Love the 5 inch senko For wacky rigging I use a owner drop shot 2/0 hook with and o-ring and lighter line you will kill it trust me.

Will a 1/0 Owner Wacky Worm hook work or do I need 2/0?

Anybody tried the Split tail Yum Dinger? Look just like a Dinger but with a fish tail on one end. Found some on clearance and figured I could at least snip the tail off if need be.

I fish my Senkos on a 3/0 EWG Gammy and wacky them on a Gammy 1/0 wacky hook.

Re: What's the deal with senko's? (buckjunkie)

One thing to look at is that different brands of senkos have different fall rates. When the fishing is slow, I'll use a bait with slow fall rate (northland tackle brand is the slowest I've tried) with a 1/0 hook to get more bites.

Just to add on what's been said, give them a try with a 3/16-3/8 oz sinker. Not a lot of people trying this and after fish have seen every kind of tail known to man by mid summer this bait starts to shine again. Wins a lot of money for me fishing from 12-20ft deep. My favorites are the wave worms brand in a 5 inch in the christmas tree color. That brand has a very unique scent to it. Good luck.
