    Re: jerkbait set up (shakeyhead)

I use mostly baitcasters for my jerkbaiting. A 6.3:1 ratio reel, 10 lb flourocarbon, and a 6'6'' Medium power Kistler Helium rod. I get plenty of distance with my setup. Using weighted (suspending) jerkbaits make it easier to cast using b/c gear. Floaters are usually lighter, and harder to cast.

Sounds like your spinning rod is too soft and your casting rod is too heavy.....or your line may be too heavy....Whch JB are you throwing...Rogues are very wind resistant for their weight. A JB with a counterbalancing sytem where the weights go to the tail when casting (Lucky Craft, Megabass, etc.) helps a lot.

i throw rogues. or try! the b/c rods i tryed to use have been an american rodsmith titanium 66 med with a bps extreme and i tryed a 70 kvd tour with a bps extreme. both have around 12lb test i think. spinning i use a american rodsmith titanium i think its a 68 med or med heavy with a bps extreme reel. i get distance out of the spinning but i get big twist. especially if i use carbon. im just lost at where to start.

that rod is probably too stiff to get any distance with a rouge...try a husky jerk

i use a 6 ' 6" med action baitcaster ( generic gander mountain ) and a shimano citica reel with 12- 15 big game.... a little stretch isnt a bad thing with jerkin...

I used to have the same problem with the b/c reels. I like to fish alot of jerk baits and flukes during the spring and summer but could not cast them far enough to cover any water. A fishing buddy then showed me a trick. He gave me a six foot medium spinning rod and reel rigged with 30lb. braid. then there was a barrel swivel with a 3' 12lb. flurocarbon leader. THe results were amazing I could cast it a mile and had the strength of braid, but the leader kept from spooking fish in clear water.

I throw pointer 78's / x raps and similiar weighted jerkbaits as far as I need to on casting equipment. Any baits that are non weighted I go spinning and mono. Not a fan of flouro on spinning reels. If I get twist I drag the line in the water with the lure cut off to un tangle it and that seems to work

I agree with the line twist. That's why i use the small barrel swivel about three feet from the lure to kep the lure from twisting up my line as bad. It still gets a little twisted but not near as bad.

What line are you using for your main line?

30lb. Stren super braid but any braid will work. I use 30lb. braid so it has either 6 or 8lb. dia. then just tie a barrel swivel with a 3' 10lb. mono.

It depends on the jerkbait. Japanese baits cast alot better than a bait like a rogue.
