Can someone tell me the shelf life of mono? If I buy a couple of spools and dont use them this year will they still be good next spring? How long will they last, any certain way I need to store them?

The last bulk spool I bought was good for two seasons. By the third season the line started breaking when I would cinch the knot down. This was 12lb Berkley Sensation and it was stored in the basement where it was cool and dry. Now I just buy what I will use for one season. Ain't a good feeling when you break off a big one.
I have line that is at least ten years old that is as strong as new. I keep it in a closet so it is cool, dry and more importantly away from any UV rays. It is mostly varieties of Stren.
Don\'t be in such a hurry, after retirement there\'s only one big event left in your life.![]()

Yeah I have some izorline that is probably 6 years old and it still retained the strength. I keep it in a closet. I would guess that some lines will hold the strength and others will degrade depending on the make up.
Mines kept in the basement in those big gallon zip loc bags. Going on fourth season zero problems.

Thanks guys, I see that keeping the UV rays out is the most important, cool and dry also. Thanks for the help all.
Black trash bag, sit on concrete floor or closet. Just put last 10# on rods last night of P-Line CXX. Added my Tangle Free near the end and parked it. Never fails, at least since 1987.
The problem is that we (the angling customers) have no way of knowing how long line has been on a retailers shelf.
This is one place I usually prefer to do business with one of the large online retailers. Their turnover in line is way more than your local shop or even some of the board sponsors. That way you are almost sure that you have the freshest line possible when you buy. Then keeping it cool and out of the sun is important. Don't forget that Flourescent bulbs put out high levels of UV also so protect your line from that also. I sometimes wonder if thats why so many people have trouble with new spools they say they just bought in a store. It was hanging there under 25 banks of flourescent tubes just wallowing in UV.
All this said, I have spools that have lasted for many years with no loss of strenght os flexibiltiy
