    lipless crankbait rod

I have been using a "standard" med 7 ft rod for lipless CB's. I have not used with a crankbait type rod. I would like to know what most of you guys are using - a standard type rod or a crankbait rod?

Depends..................I like using the LC 500MAX which is 3/4 oz......for that I use a MH rod & 14/15 lb line just for rippin

for anything 1/2oz or lighter....I dont think you have a problem with a M rod

I use crank bait rods. 7'er medium for 3/4oz, and a 6'6" medium for 1/2oz and smaller.

I really like glass rods for tossing traps.

I like using 17 lb. test line with a medium heavey graphite rod. You get good hook setting power and plenty of backbone for control. (this is the same set-up that Rick Clunn uses for lipless cranks; except he actually prefers a true heavy action rod)
    Good Luck

    Re: lipless crankbait rod (stumpy)

Kistler Helium 6'9" MH APC with 15 lb fluorocarbon. Personally I feel this is the best rod because it has a somewhat slower tip but still enough backbone for a solid hook set after one of those mile long trap casts.

    Re: lipless crankbait rod (TightLip)

I use a 6 foot medium glass rod for 1/2 oz. and smaller. I find that with a longer rod, no matter what the action, that I miss more fish because I take the bait away from the fish on the hook set.

I use 7' M/H rods for everything 1/2oz. and larger.

    I use 6.5' M rods for everything under 1/2oz.

It makes no difference if the bait is a crank, lipless, T-rig, Jig, topwater, etc.

This way, I only have to adjust my cast for the difference in lure, not the difference in rod everytime.

6 1/2' MH for 1/2 oz traps....gives you enough back bone to fight the fish and rip the bait out of the grass. For me it's the Ideal length for trap fishing all day (not that I do that much)

I have 3- 7ft glass rods for traps, cranks and spinnerbaits... throw all sizes with the same rods... just feels right... buzzbaits too... I just match the line to the conditions...

Here in Fl. there's been a trend to use 7' heavy rods for fishing traps in hydrilla.. It lets the rod do the work, when ripping the bait free of the hydrilla.. I think they match that rod with mono line.. So far I've not went that route, but I've tried a friends setup, and I admit it feels pretty neat! Alot less work on the angler.. He went to buy a rod specifically for traps, and the tackle shop owner told him about this trend..

    Re: (Mickstix)

great info mick... I'll take the heavy rod info... here in the northeast, I Don't do alt of weed ripping with a lipless... when I do it's usually with braid...
All Star used to make a few crankbait rods that were good... GT-2 I think... 7 fter... would like to get my hands on one of them...
Also , everytime I see that Lamiglas Skeet reese crankin rod, i lose it... want one bad...
This weekend for me is a smallmouth tournament, So I got 12# flourac. on one crankin rod for traps, and 30# braid on another for spinnerbaits... both glass rods...
here is the deal... I win any thing this weekend, I'm getting that Lamiglas rod!
