    smallmouth question

are they always finicky? I fish for them couple times a year throwing 78 pointers on 10lb flouro. I located fish in 20' of water and caught some but had tons of follows. kept switching colors of jerks with same results. sometimes the pause would get them other times they would just swim on...whats some other good baits in clear water for fish on deep flats?

    Re: smallmouth question (walligator)

hey walli, had that happen alot! here is what i got... try dropping down to 8# test and a spinning rod... long a cast as you can muster... fish the jerk fast but give it a long pause with just some little twitchs... tease them... alot of times the wind helps them bite better... Also gotta say throw a spook out and work that slow... caught more big ones in open water than any other bait... one other bait I guess... watermelon or smoke tube with a light 1/8oz head... chuck it way out and retrieve it like a jerkbait...
try a husky jerk too... pointers get more followers for me, the jerk gets bites...

ya its funny they have no problems pounding topwater yet the same day finicky on jerks. i did notice before that the husky jerk produced well..... next time i will have to bring a spinning rod and give it a try
