    Line Diameter on a Baitcaster

what is the lightest pound test line you would put on a baitcaster. i have a quantum tour 1160pt and was thinking about putting 8 lb test on it. have a g-loomis drop shot rod i am putting it on. what are the drawbacks to putting the lighter line on there? would like to go as small as possible, maybe even 6 lb. i know they say fluoro is invisible, but if i can see it in the water up here, i know fish can too. thanks.

As long as it doesn't slip behind the spool, you should be fine with 6 or 8 lb test.

If you are going to use 6 or 8 lb line why not just put it on a spinning reel??? I think running that light line on a baitcaster is asking for trouble.

Shouldnt be a problem. Most people, including myself use a spinning setup for light line apps, but if your reel can cast light stuff it should work great. I know there are some reels made just for things like that, the Daiwa Pixy being one. They are a JDM product thats pretty pricey though!

As was stated... a "professional over run," which we ALL do whether we want to admit it or not, is much easier to get out with a heavier line. Also, if you are going to use floro or mono in those lower weights the backlash WILL put a week spot in the line 100% of the time. You also take the great risk of simply tossing your bait off into the lake because your backlash stopped the reel and the line broke. I personally don't throw any baitcaster with less than 10 lb line on it. In fact, most of my baitcasters are filled with braid... other than my spinnerbait rod which has 12 lb mono.
