I don't fish jigs very often, looking forward to changing that this year. What's the deal with the weed guard, should it be trimmed? If so how much?

It depends on the cover that you're going to fish. If it's heavy cover then don't trim just try bending it back and forth and the base to kind of fan it out so the hook point will go through better on the hookset. If it's more open water cut some of the strands off at the base of the weedguard and trim it down in length to about 3/16" above the hook point. That's what I do anyway.
I just bend the guard back and forth alot to loosen it up. Kinda fan it out, that way it is relatively "soft" and easy to set the hook with, and yet if fished slowly will still be relatively snag free.
If you're fishing a lake with not much timber in it I would thin out the weed guard a bit by removing several of the strands. I also like to trim mine back to where the end of the gueard is maybe an 1/8" past the point of the hook, any longer than that and i think that it hinders the hook set some. I will definitely keep it a little longer than that on lakes with a lot of timber where i'm pitchin' that thing into nasty stuff to keep it from getting hung up so often. Those bites are mostly going to be bigger fish that are going to hammer it anyway. Just my two cents.
