    Fishing tidal rivers?

What are some basic things to look for when tagerting smallmouth and largemouth in tidal rivers. This is something that I am really excited to learn about. I have moved to an area where the best fishing seems to come from tidal rivers. I have spent some time fishing inshore for redfish, snook, and grouper and it seems like the incoming is good on certain spots and the outgoing is good on others. There are so many combos. What are some basic rules of engagement?

Follow the tide. When it is high fish the slackwater areas, like way up a ditch or creek that goes 'dry' at low tide. At low tide find the deepest holes in the main channel, and drag baits downstream like the critters do moving back out.

While the slackwater areas are filling up fish the main river banks wherever you find eddy currents around obstructions like tree tops, barges sticking out into the river, loading piers. Always swim a bait downstream. Swim a bait into an eddy current rather than cast directly into it.

On my first trip fishing a tidal river dumping into the Chesapeake Bay I hired a guide just to get a good introduction to the methods. It was money well spent.

    Outachita,
That is one of the systems I am planning on learning. North East River, Susquehanna etc... Also plan on hitting the Potomac.
