if you can find anything that might resemble a helgramite the larva of the dole
fly i bet it would work creme used to make some thing like that but dont know if the still do. i know there are a lot of flys that are made to resemble them but think creme used to make something in plastic. just might have to down size to light spinning

i have found that small tubes and small cranks work good. green pumpkin tubes, and crawfish cranks. i fish the ohio river and mongahala river near pittsburgh. it seems that fish gang up where there is current and any sand bar you find will have fish on it. jerkbaits work good if the water is clear. hope this helps!!

Re: RIVER SMALL MOUTH QUESTIONS (jassbass)

I fish rivers a lot for smallies, and I could very easily get by on two styles of baits. The first is most definately tubes. I fish them two ways, on a tubehead and texas rigged. I really lake Case Plastics tubes and my top color is mudpie. In muddy water you cannot go wrong with black neon. Also, anything with green or pumpkin in it is usually good.

The other style of baits that works well for me is soft plastic jerkbaits. Again, I prefer Case plastics SSS in white, pearl, blue pearl or smoke. I'll either fish them on a standard EWG hook or else use the ones with the weight molded on the shaft (I use Falcons) which will allow me to work the bait either faster or deeper.

Other good bait are a 4 inch senko, Case Jack's worms, small shakey heads (4 inch finesse worms), drop shotting, rattle baits (I like the Xcalibur XR50 in Rayburn Red), cranks and jerkbaits.

Black tubes............black with red fleck, or junebug in muddy water. In clear water, try to choose a colr that best matches the river bottom.

you also cant go wrong with an inline spinner. I know some may disagree, but you can catch a TON of fish on them. And, you never know what you are going to pull out.

KVD has a video out in the "Classic Patterns" series where he slays them with a spinnerbait fishing on flats. I've also seen Shaw Grigsby slay them in the same type of situation.

I dont have much confidence in the regular spinnerbait so I prefew an in-line spinnerbait, like a roostertail or Mepps Aglia. I like the mepps better because they have a colorado blade instead of a willow leaf blade like the rooster tail. I've caught tons of fish on both, all the way up to 7lbs, as of last week.

Also, there's a guy on BBC that I see alot of who really catches the smallmouths. I cant remember his name off the top of my head, but his sig and avatar have him holding a couple of BIG smallies.

Re: RIVER SMALL MOUTH QUESTIONS (Luke)

i used to fish new river in northern va alot. i caught lots of fish on a pumkinseed kalins grub 3" on an 1/8th ounce jig head. fished it in deep water and swift shallow water. kept it tied on all the time in shallow water would throw behind rocks into the calm areas and wind back in and in deeper water would let it sink and then wind in, i also used a big-o crank bait i liked the crawfish colors, and the tiny torpedo top water bait, i liked it in black but caught fish on lots of other colors.
