    Experts: another vro question

    1996 johnson 115 (V60), serial J115ELEUA (EVA ?)
lost cylinder #4, earlier this year - a ring let go.
had a reputable marine tech, overhaul it for me - 4 pistons, block bored to 20 over. he blamed vro (but could find nothing wrong with it, said only showed signs of slightly over oiling ?) oil level up to that point was going down with use as expected. with further conversation with him i take it he is a merc man.
I find this a pain, mixing oil.
would it be a good idea to go back to vro (he simply cut a wire, and capped off vro hose
or would i be better to keep mixing.

OK first things first, this is just ny opinion and I will stand corrected by anyone who may know better, the dealer you referred to as reputable is (in my opinion) a long way from it, your oil system is very reliable if looked after, secondly, if the VRO failed, then almost certainly all cyclinders will be toast, not just one, and over oiling never caused a piston to bugger up, ever to my knowledge, so take that as you may. I would replace and/or repair the old VRO, get it done by a true REPUTABLE mechanic though, don't care if he is a Merc man or not.

Here read this then decide for yourself, but if he cut a wire then you'll need to replace the system, he could have simply disconnected the harness.

Think about it for a minute - If you religiously premixed your own gas and oil, then had a cylinder fail where the mechanic said that you forgot to put oil in the gas, would you trust him?

The "VRO" does the premixing before the oil gets each carb, so there is NO way only one cylinder can go bad because of the VRO.
