    Wire weed Guards on Jigs

Do you guys cut off a portion of the wire or bend it in at the hook? I have purchased some Lil' Jigs and Spider Jigs that have a Wireguard instead of the standard fiber guards. I sought and received some instruction from PJ Lures, but a picture would help me considerably. I don't think I am bending it right. This wire is pretty stiff and may even poke the fish and prevent a good hook up.

I don't trim mine or bend them at all, and have never had a problem

I've just received a couple of replies to my post on the wireguards. Both tell me to leave as it. Maybe that's the way to go. Thanks

If I am not fishing heavy shallow cover, I will cut the weed gaurd down to 6 or 7 strains and shorten it. Most of the time you are fishing deep structure, you dont need the weed gaurd. You are more verticle and less likely to hang up.

While flipping docks, You usually have heavier line and and more stout rod so you can get good hook penetration. While fishing deep with the weenie rods and light line, you dont need anything blocking your hook set.

    Just a thought

How about jigs with the wire weedguards? Do you modify those?

I bought a new jig with wire weed guard a long time ago that came in the package with the very last 1/8 inch bent down just slightly,I wore that sucker out and it was my go to for a long time(till I lost it).I thought they would all be that way so when Id buy one and it wasnt bent if I didnt get a bite soon with it Id bend it a little never had any bad issues with it bent but it was more of a confidence thing I think!and it never failed if I had to bend one the very next cast Id get bit(with something)

As I stated, I don't modify my wire guard jigs at all. The ones I use are these which are model #44-W from Yamamoto and I simply form the wires into a "V"

The other jigs I have tried are the Spot Stalkers from Perry Haus and they have a single wire guard. I don't modify them either.

If I am fishing a regular jig with a fiber guard I also modify it as Ryan stated.

We use finess jigs with the wire guard a lot here. I always bend the last 1/8 inch or so down toward the hook point. I haven't had a problem with it yet.

Re: Wire weed Guards on Jigs (elmicko)

Thanks. I am relatively new to jig fishing and haven't had any finesse ones with wireguards before. The Bitsy Jigs have worked well for me with the fiberguards. So far bending 1/8 " down toward the hook looks like an option to leaving it as is. Those wires are pretty stiff.
