    top water rods

... was looking at Basscenter Saturday, when B. Velvick says he fishes top water lures like chuggers and walking baits on a 7-foot rod.... I can't imagine that being comfortable... What length rod do you guys fish these two baits with?

6'6", I am not tall enough to make that comfortable. also handle length has a lot to do with it.

by personal preference I use my jerkbait rod as a double for this.....after jerk bite is done I'll tie on sammy, chug bug or other top water.

    Rod is a 6'2" Avid...Med with x--fast tip for perfect walk the dog & twitching....paired with a TDA 150P

Also have a Cara 6'9" Light for smaller baits....IE mini-chug or mini splash

    I use a 7 footer. I might build myself a 7'3" or 7'4" rod for topwater.

I"m 6'1 and I've never used a rod that long for a top water bait. I hit the side of my boat when working a 6'6 rod..., what's the deal....

I make long cast with a top water bait so I use a 7 footer as well. You can take up slack much faster and have a little more rod to play a fish since you are most likely using treble hook baits.

    Re: top water rods (Ticman)

I think I've found my all time favorite Topwater/Pop-r rod.

It's a custom built, 6'6" Med, moderate action St.Croix!! I've caught somewhere around 70-80 largemouths on it in the past 2 weeks. I've only lost one fish. I think I lost this fish due to dull hooks. I like to fish a Pop-r with the tip down towards the water, so a long rod just won't work.

My 2nd choice is the old Zell Roland spinnerbait rod. The SBR1 6'4" model. It has a good soft tip, but still has some backbone to handle large fish.
I'd give anything to find another one of these rods...
