    97 Evinrude 130 fuel problem (?)

I have a 97 130 Evinrude which has always started first try after the winter layover. This year it refuses to start. I changed the plugs and verified that they are sparking. The fuel is from last year, but I have by-passed the main fuel tank with a 3 gallon tank with new fuel. I pulled the output side hose off of the fuel pump and did get fuel, but the pressure didn't appear very high. I used some ether and the engine starts but doesn't continue to run.

How do I check the fuel pressure on this engine? I saw a schrader valve on a part below the fuel pump (looked like a solenoid) and was wondering if that was where the pressure is checked.

    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the BBC.

First thing, Put the ether away and dont use it again.

Have you pulled the carb drain plugs to see what is in the carbs?

They may be full of oil, the motor wont start on oil.

Thanks, I'll give it a try tomorrow morning. What would cause the carbs to be full of oil?

The oil tank only vents in to allow air in as oil is pulled out, because it does not vent out pressure in the oil tank can cause oil to be pushed into the fuel system when the motor is stored.

Thanks for your help. The problem was oil in the carbs. This was the first time it has happened. Is there any way to prevent it in the future?

You can poke a hole in the underside of the oil cap, this will keep this from happening again.
