    Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!!

Spent the weekend in the hospital with "acute renal failure" after fishing the Potomac River on Friday and Saturday. Made sure we drank one bottle of gatorade every 2 hours during the day on Saturday. At around 1 o'clock I started to feel muscle soreness in my shoulders, back, chest, etc... At that point I was pretty much done for the day. We stayed on the water fishing until 2pm, but I was going through the motions and was physically beat. By 3pm I was physically worn out from the heat. I soaked my shirt in water and stayed in the a/c while weigh-in finished. By 4:30 every muscle in my body was spasming. Muscle spasms were in my back, abdomin, quads, hamstrings, rib cage, etc... I even started to get spasms in my arms and hands. By the time we got to the hospital my kidneys were completely shut down. The doctors diagnosed it as "acute renal injury". My body wasn't filtering my blood and all of the by products were building up in my muscles. They ran nine bags of IV fluids into me, and made me drink three 32 oz bottles of water before my kidneys started working again. They also gave me IV antibiotics. Believe me it's not an experience you want to go through. Good news is everything is fine now and there's no permanent kidney damage. Point of the story is make sure you take care of yourself on these hot summer days.

I am glad you are ok. I am horrible about not drinking fluids while I fish. That sure is an eye opener.

Yeah, I thought a bottle every two hours was good, but apparently not. I'm sure I was probably already dehydrated from prefishing on Friday. Definitely a scary ordeal.

The heat on the Potomac was brutal this weekend. Makes you wonder why tournaments are scheduled this time of year with air and water temps so high. Glad you and Jerri and doing well. Now that Abby's not working anymore we'll try to get together with the BBC gang more often.

Sid, Glad to hear you are doing better. Allan and I were there Friday and Saturday also, but we drank lots and lots of Gatorade both days. We were lucky I guess in that we did not have any issues...but man was it ever hot! You guys did very well in the tourney under those conditions!

Wow what an eye opener, glad you are ok. I am very bad about eating and drinking when out on the boat. I am making it a point now hearing about this to do better about drinking the right fluids.

Glad it didn't get any worse for ya. I had plenty of fluids in me yesterday while fishing on the Chick. I kept at least one frozen bottle of water out and drinking it while it was thawing out. Gatorade and water is all I drink...

By the way you are the 3rd. or 4th person I know of that has gone to the hospital for not drinking enough water throughout the day..

Glad to hear you are o.k. Sid. Can someone give us a refresher course in how to protect ourselves from something like this? Example: What should we or should we not be drinking would be helpful to me. I normally drink whatever is in the cooler...

Dang Sid...glad you're OK. Dehydration can certainly sneek up on you and do some damage!

Glad you are okay Sid! Same thing happened to me several years ago during a region tournament on the Chowan. I managed to avoid the hospital, but I was on the verge of a heat stroke at days end... if thats what you call it. I learned after that to really try and hydrate myself the night before... a long day of fishing. Then keep drinking during the day while on the water.

NO EXPERT- Nothing but water and gatorade. You loose gallons of fluid while sweating. Gatorade for the electrolytes. Drink water often even if you sip it. Your body is made of mostly water so it needs to be replaced when sweating. STAY AWAY FROM SODA'S AND CARBONATED DRINKS.

Good post! Tea & coffee need to be on that list as well.
