Spent the weekend in the hospital with "acute renal failure" after fishing the Potomac River on Friday and Saturday. Made sure we drank one bottle of gatorade every 2 hours during the day on Saturday. At around 1 o'clock I started to feel muscle soreness in my shoulders, back, chest, etc... At that point I was pretty much done for the day. We stayed on the water fishing until 2pm, but I was going through the motions and was physically beat. By 3pm I was physically worn out from the heat. I soaked my shirt in water and stayed in the a/c while weigh-in finished. By 4:30 every muscle in my body was spasming. Muscle spasms were in my back, abdomin, quads, hamstrings, rib cage, etc... I even started to get spasms in my arms and hands. By the time we got to the hospital my kidneys were completely shut down. The doctors diagnosed it as "acute renal injury". My body wasn't filtering my blood and all of the by products were building up in my muscles. They ran nine bags of IV fluids into me, and made me drink three 32 oz bottles of water before my kidneys started working again. They also gave me IV antibiotics. Believe me it's not an experience you want to go through. Good news is everything is fine now and there's no permanent kidney damage. Point of the story is make sure you take care of yourself on these hot summer days.
