    choke not working

my 1989 175 hp engine won't start when I took the engine cover off I noticed when I pushed the key in the choke was not clicking. when I spray carb cleaner into the carb the engine starts and run forever shut it off and as long as it doesn't have to be choked starts right up and runs any suggestions

Check the leads to the primer for around battery voltage when the key is depressed, if voltage is there you need to replace the primer.

I remove the primer off engine and hooked directly to battery and primer works I guess its a problem with the purple wire between the key and battery do you agree

Dont forget, the hot needs a ground, be sure to check the wires to the solenoid for hot and ground.

Check the way the red lever is pointing too. It should be point towards the bottom of the primer.

The bottom of the primer is opposite the end that has the red lever. The wires also enter on the bottom end.

The handle part of the lever(long end of lever) should be turned so it is at the bottom ??
It kinda clicks into that position,,,,,

mine was turned to the top,, could this be a cause of the engine being hard to start the first time of the day and fouling plugs ????

Yes this is called the run position and cancels out the choke function.
