    Evinrude 225 won't go

I have a 2003 Evinrude 225 HO. The motor will not run over 1000 rpm. It starts and idles fine but misses at the 1000 rpm and will not go over the 1000 rpm. I was running down the lake when it started. The check engine light came on and it cut off. When I restarted the motor the check engine light went off but the motor would not rev past the 1000 rpm. I have pulled each plug and checked the fuel and oil lines. It seems to be a electronic issue. Anyone have any input.

Sounds like the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) has gone bad. You will need to hook it up to the diagnostic program to get the code that was set. The software can be used to verify the problem is the TPS as well. If you do not have the software then you will need to take it to an BRP Mechanic.

I would agree with getting the recorded code.

Still lost.... I took the boat to the shop and had the codes read. Only code in the last 10 hrs was a low voltage. We replaced the plugs and fuel filter, checked the fuel pressure and throtle position sensor and still having the same problem. After 3 hrs of trouble shooting still no clue.

Was the laptop hooked up and used for the whole 3 hour troubleshooting period, or did y'all just use the poke and hope method?

Does it run smooth up to about 1000 rpm, then run rough and shudder and not go any faster?

The laptop was hooked up the entire time and they watched the screen while I reved it up repeatedly. We let it idle for about 30 min. It does run smooth at idle and up to about 1000 rpm. When it hits 1000 rpm it shutters bad and wont rev any further. It will cut off if you contuine to give it gas.

When you say cut off - do you mean the motor quits, or just will not go any faster rpm?

As you give it gas when it get to about 1000 rpm it starts to miss. As you give it more the miss contuines and if you keep pressing the pedal further it will shut off.

It's tough trying to diagnose something third hand and not having the details given. It almost sounds like the SAFE mode has kicked in, but the killing at full throttle is puzzliing

What were the TPS numbers at starting, idle, at the misfiring 1000 rpm, and just before the engine shut off?

What did the timing and injector timings read at those stages?

Did anyone perform a cylinder drop test at the misfiring speed?

Were you using the DOS software or the Windows software?

Did you save the computer reports at the various speeds?

Is the crankshaft position sensor bracket "L" shaped or is there a third piece that makes in triangular shaped looking at it from the side?

Re: Evinrude 225 won't go (Eube)

I am having the same problem. I took the boat out the other day fished a while, got ready to leave and the motor acted like it was flooded. I have a 2004 225 HO. Anyway, finally got it started, but when I tried to take off it spit and sputtered and shut down. I tried to slowly rev the engine up and the shut off alarm went off and the engine shut down, NEVER TO REFIRE. Took it to a mechanic, who hooked it up to the computer and it gave an error saying my throttle positioner sensor had gone bad. He installed a new sensor and suggested I put new plugs in and change the water/fuel filter, also suggested I run some ring free through it. Got to the lake, the engine idled smooth, revved smooth, but when I tried to take off it acted like it was flooded. I could smell fuel but thought it might be because I smashed the pedal to the floor. Motor quit again. Plan on checking vacuum lines, changing PCV valve, just checking to see if something is disconnected. Please any information will be helpful. I am not very good at troubleshooting so I need lots of help. Very intimidated when I take the cowling off. Thanks Tim

Sounds similar to my issue. Does your "no oil" light / alarm ever turn on?

Mine hesitates bad during hole shot but runs fine once on plane. Has not stalled on me though. Changing plugs tomorrow.

Have you removed the air box and verified that the throttle plates are opening when the throttle is advanced?

Re: Evinrude 225 won't go (Danrude)

I will be off tomorrow and plan on taking a look my the engine. Talk about bad timing, Elite Series was here then FLW Tour and I couldn't get on the water because the motor wouldn't run. Anybody else have any good ideas on troubleshooting let us know. I will pull the air breather tomorrow. Last time I had it off I noticed quite a bit of oil in the bottom of it.

The oil in the air box is normal.
