    Erratic tach and shifter problems

I replaced my tach with a faria, and it sometimes works if the engine is idling, but when I give it gas it bounces around. Any idea's?

Also my concealed shifter is sloppy, and I could not find an allen bolt to tighten like you sugested Rusty. Any other thoughts? It is also next to impossible to find nuetral when the engine is trimmed up and running, which makes parking and putting on the trailer a royal pain.

Is there a good service place in the birmingham, al area?

    Who is seahorse?

    Yes it is a 1989 GT175.

And what can I do with this shifter? Is there a replacement available or something? I think its just so old its sloppy from wear. I hate that I cannot find neutral with the motor trimmed up, that is just not a good thing for manuevering around shallow docks and boat ramps.

Maybe there is a shifter mod I could do...

Sorry I couldn't help it, I like to modify things.

Seahorse is a Man with more knowledge of outboard motors than I will ever have and he is kind enough to share his knowledge with the world on sites like this and others.

If your control is a concealed side mount...the part number for a replacement is 176917 @ $269.99.

If your control is a surface mount...The part number is 175943 @ $214.60.

Ok, but more importantly, how would I get the stinking thing out? Its a concealed mount by the way.

I like it but its been rode hard and put up wet if you know what I mean.

The new one will come with installation instructions, just follow them in reverse.
