Where's the best place to launch, and do you have to have a NC fishing license for down there ?
Thinking about making a short trip there in the next few days....

Shoups landing on rt 13 south would probably be the best place if your coming from NN. If you get on 13 south from 58 west in suffolk and follow it into carolina the ramp is down a short road on your left. There is a sign indicating the ramp but it's pretty east to miss. If you go across the river on 13 then you missed the turn for the ramp. Yes you do need a carolina license.
Once you go past the flashing yellow light on 13 you're only a few miles from the turn for the ramp. Mark, when you're running down river and you see a bunch of white poles in the water, make sure you steer well around them. They're net poles for catching the shad, I think.
Good luck out there, be safe, and enjoy yourself.![]()
Can I get a license at Shoups ?? or do I need to get one somewhere else ?

Mark, you can get it online here: http://www.ncwildlife.org/fs_index_01_license.htm
There is no store at Shoupe's ramp.

there's nowhere to get one at shoups, you might want to check with Fred at Tunis bait and tackle, it's just a few miles past Shoups.

Well, made it there today finally.
WOW !!!!!! I thought the chick was bad for floating debris........and the current was pretty fast too...took some getting use to.
Anyway, managed to fish for 3 or 4 hrs before I had to come home. Got 4 keepers, but 2 were barely big enough. All on a buzzbait mid morning, go figure.
Missed 2 more cuz my dumb butt forgot to check the drag on the new reels...hard to set the hook when the drag is backed almost all the way off.......and it makes for a good backlash as well when you hit the thumb bar as you do it (I'm use to a button on the side, not a bar all the way across).
Did get to try out all my new rods & reels. MAN, what a difference in new vs the 20 yr old reels I have been using. With these new ones, I just have to think where I want it to go, and it goes....the old ones, I had to throw it pretty good.
I think I may have to exchange my spinning rods tho, they is a little stiff for my fishing style.

The rivers feeding the Chowan are quite high. I have been receiving flood warnings for the Blackwater. The debris is coming from these rivers...
