New bantam xg—tight spool tensioner knob

Hi all, I have a couple of new bantam xgs for pitching and punching. I can’t tighten the tension onob on either of them but a few mm each way. I don’t think they’re frozen just extremely tight and I can’t keep a grip on them. I need them a hair or two tighter as I’m fluffing on the very end of a pitch/punch even with all 6 brakes on. I hope someone has solved this riddle and are willing to share. Thanks. GW

I don't have much on helping with the CCC tightening, however have you tried installing slightly heavier brakes?

I have two of the Bantam A's, actually had 4 or 5 at one time. Didn't have that issue with any of them. There is a rubber o-ring on the threads to keep the cap from working itself loose. Occasionally one will need a little more effort to turn but never had one that didn't.

I have an ‘18 model that the spool was not making contact with the spacer inside the cast control knob. There is a big difference between not being able to turn it and the knob being tightened all the way down. Have you taken it off? How many turns are you able to make before it sticks? They are rather tight and take a good grip sometimes.

If this is the case, then cutting out and adding a plastic or metal spacer in the CCC should help make better contact and create tension.

Shimano doesn't want you cranking down on that knob and the Japanese instructions tell you that's it's basically a zero adjust like Daiwa. The US market reel instructions don't say this since using spool tension is popular in the US. Its still a Japanese reel from a Japanese company and if the spool tension is hard to tighten then it's that way on purpose. I'd normally say don't use spool tension and use reels with braking profiles that fit your use case (ie: don't use the fast and free spinning centrifugal reel if line fluff at the end of the cast is a concern) but you already have made your purchase so you can slow the braking profile of the Shimano with some spool tension to make it more Daiwa like.
