Fishing fast vs. fishing slow

Watching some of the MLF Heavy Hitters tournament today and it blows my mind how fast some of these guys are covering water. There have been several times where I've seen a piece of cover like a laydown or a dock that looked absolutely prime for a big fish and they make one or two casts and then they're by it. I know the water is up and there's more cover in the water now, but it just surprises me that on some of these spots they aren't taking at least a few minutes to slow down and pick it apart with a jig or something.

I take two casts on laydowns. One on both sides. Most stumps get one flip. Sometimes two if it looks right. I'm looking for biting fish, not fish I have to force. I'll go find one that is stupid soon enough.

I do both….. usually if I’m somewhere I’ve never been or on a stretch I’ve never fished and confidence is low, I’m moving fast just hitting “the high spots”… I call little grass points along a bank or obvious lone piece of wood or isolated indentation in the bank or whatever might be breaking a little current “high spots”…. It takes a couple bites pretty quick or in a short distance to make me slow down…. Now, once I slow down and if I’m getting bit, I’ll pick everything apart at a pace that most people can’t stand… as long as the wind and current allow me to..

I like to do what I call “soak the worm”…. I usually throw a craw and not a worm but when I’m talking out loud to my dog he doesn’t know the difference between a worm or a craw!! But I’ll let it just drop and pretty much dead stick for a few seconds on high potential spots.. gets me lots and lots of bites!!

I’m also a guy that is not bothered by fishing behind someone else… I rather not but it won’t ruin my day to go in behind someone else.. except for the jackwagons 4 people deep in bayboats slinging corks with live shrimp keeping every single little 10” bass…. Those fools drive me nuts!!

For you guys that fish fast, I'm assuming you are fishing big bodies of water? I think I fish much slower due to the fact that I am fishing really small lakes most of the time and so if I fished really fast I'd fish the whole lake in an hour.

I have fished with a bunch of pros and upper echelon local anglers. They all have the same trait. Speed. They have all fished way quicker than I normally do. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Makes me wonder how many fish, possibly BIG fish they pass up trying to cover so much water.

I Marshaled for 3 pros and none of them covered water like that. They all 3 picked apart every piece of cover they came across. And caught a lot of fish.

FFS has made eliminating water and unneeded cast vastly easier. These guys scan under a dock and then move on.

I think it might just be a tournament strategy. Find one, find many the saying goes and then hopefully pile on quick.

Me, I suppose I’m probably classified as slow. I like to pick apart every fishy looking spot. If there is no action, I’ll move a reasonable distance away and start again but I do notice the pattern, find one, find many usually.

I will often dissect a laydown like I'm performing spinal surgery. I've caught several big fish with this multiple cast approach, sometimes getting them just to attack it out of instinct or anger.

I probably fish way too slow. I fish a lot of smaller lakes but I’m lucky if my motor is running for more than 30min a day including idle time..

I despise fishing slow, just can’t do it. I know there are times it’s hurt me but if they aren’t going to bite I’m moving on. Unless it’s a 7 pounder on bed I’m not making repeat casts to things

Tx fishing for me is fast and furious, with pre-fishing mainly just scanning for hours and hours with a few casts
to confirm. One reason I limit the Tx's I fish. Just not as much fun as experimenting with different baits when
FFS shows you there are tons of returns down there and you think they are bass.....sometimes I get lucky and
learn something new about a technique....the fun part.

I prefer to fish fast for actively feeding fish or those that will react to a moving bait. I also don't waste a whole bunch of time on a spot if I haven't had a bite within the first five to ten minutes. However, I can fish as slow as anyone when that is what it takes to get bit.

I fish slow but will go back through an area that produces even slower

depends if im in a confident area or not. If not ill fish fast until i get a few bites and it seems like a productive area then ill come back through slowing down sometimes come back through and catch some sometimes not... sometimes best to just keep fishing fast and covering water but again sometimes it doesnt pay off.. sometimes they just dont want slow, sometimes they dont want fast. Stupid fish, im usually doing whichever they dont want though . sometimes sometimes sometimes, bass fishing

I am all about speed. Not looking to catch them lazy fish. I am looking for that reaction strike. That torpedo aiming for my bait in 2 ft of water.
