    My son's future career

Attending the local vocational school his junior and senior year. This year he is enrolled in Utility Linesman 1 as a junior. Over the summer he will be taking his remaining four high school courses and then taking double labs in the fall of 2025, Utility Linesman 2 and Electrical 1 and getting his CDL.

The link below is from the school he attends. They have a year end rodeo event in the UL classes and he is on pace to do very well or possibly win it among the junior class.
I'm so dang proud of him and can't wait to see where the future take him. Glad he likes heights because I don't and now he can set all of our deer stands!!!

I wish him the best in his future. Linemen are definitely needed, I would think. Enough storms knock enough power out all over at different times across the country. Good luck to him in all of his ventures.
A man that was like a father to me was a linesman for the phone company back is his days of it, when they used the spiked boots. I sure miss him and his wife that was like my mom. I never went back to Jennings on Lake Pierce much after they passed, because I felt a void even worse while there.
A few times visiting a friend and his family that I got going there. And a couple just to try and get him a clue of what may be working, so he could possibly beat his brother in their family bass tournament. But the information never was enough to help.

Utility lineman make dang good money. Sounds like he is starting off right to be in high school (I assume) and working towards that career. He'll be retired in his early 50's looking for another career LOL

It is through his high school. He's always said that he is not a college person...his older brother is in his 3rd year of a Finacial course in college. This program has been a huge blessing for him, he loves it. If he adds a CDL to his resume....he'll have a job before he graduates.

I have been telling him that if he puts his nose down and finds that good job that he can be retired in his 50's for sure.

Linemen make excellent money. There’s a big utility company here that usually employed younger kids. Back about 10 years ago, someone with about 5yrs of experience was making well over 75k which is insane for this area. They earned their money for sure; made soft kids tough and tough kids even tougher. Just keep on him about priorities and whatnot..

unfortunately, young linemen at that company were known for spending their money in three places: brand new diesel trucks, women, and up their nose. Whenever a younger kid would get into trouble at a bar fight or with drugs and they worked as a lineman, the most common phrase that followed was “doesn’t surprise me” or “makes sense”. Had a few old friends that worked for the company.

Not video any longer but hope he likes heights! Congrats
If professionals who's careers depend on catching fish use FFS then that's what I'm using. Might be too simple of a philosophy but makes sense to me.

Linemen make really good money. My brother in law has been in the trade for 34 years, unfortunately it is hard on the body and at 52 he is forced to retire. His knees, back and ankles are toast.

My son who’s 14 wants to be a lineman. I told him if he follows through gets his hours and journeyman’s card he’ll be making six figures by the time he’s 22. Hell, apprentices around here make $38/hr.

My son in law works on the 500KV transmission lines and he makes GREAT money. Been doing it for over 15 years and is the foreman over his crew.

Tougher to get an apprenticeship right now than you'd think, but it is possible. More possible to sign a bunch of open books as a groundman and travel as a grunt until you get the hours and an opportunity to interview for a lineman apprentice. A few JL's will respect the work and knowledge he's accumulated in school, but a bunch will chit on it. He needs to be extremely thick skinned. It's a tough row to hoe and I wish him nothing but the best.

If he decides to move to Florida, he'll get a lot of work in that field with all the hurricanes we have

Tell him good luck. I wish him the best. Awesome job. Did it 35 1/2 years. As said above he’ll miss a lot of holidays, several events the kids may have. Wear your safety gear, ask a lot of questions. Take care of your knees, shoulders and back, and your tools. “If it ain’t grounded it ain’t dead”

Good job with good benefits he will never be looking for work. As others said Just always remind him to use his PPE and to work smart. Saving time by beating on your body is never worth it in the long run. Its not even worth it to his employer as you would rather pay a little extra time and have a healthier 50 year old worker some day.
