generic starting question

is it true a motor will not even try to fire if the starter doesnt spin it fast enough?
we have a 1977 85 hp rude(sorry dont have model number) that will not start until it has been cranked for about 5 minutes. then it starts okay the rest of the day.
the starter is the original and we are replacing it anyway. i hope someone can answer me. thanks

The statement is true for the newer EMM/ECU controlled motors. The old carbed motors were more forgiving when it comes to the speed the starter turns. If it is starting eventually then I would confirm that the choke is working. I believe if memory serves me correctly that motor has a solenoid that kicks in when you turn the key on and closes the plate to choke the carburetor. You will need to confirm that the solenoids is working. Also make sure the fuel bulb is pumped hard and the motor is trimmed down until it is level.

thanks. this one has a seperate switch for the choke but it is working. would a small gas leak at the carb cause this starting problem? the system not being fully pressurized?
