    Help!..........1999 Johnson 225 H.O. Won't Idle....Again

    1999 Johnson 225 H.O. Carb Mod#J225HPLEEN

Rusty.....I ran the motor up to temp. and could not hold my hand on the heads for more than 2 seconds........so they appear to be hot enough.

I went to turn out the low speed fuel mixture screw 1 turn like you said.......but there is no spring on the screw....so when I turned them out 1 turn.....they were pretty loose. It was obvious that they would have vibrated out if I left them that way, so I tightened them back down. They were all seated pretty snug when I went to back them out. This was the only screw that looked like an air/fuel mixture screw....and it was on the left side of the carb with a small number "27" stamped on all of them. I did not see any screw on the carbs that had a spring on them.

I did notice small "puddles" of gas/oil at the lip of each carb. if that means anything. Any other ideas on how to get this animal to idle???? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

You didn't take the idle jet out did ya> Not familiar with any numbers being on the idle mixture screws.... The screw sits way back in a hole, on the left side, and requires a allen wrench to adjust... Mine one time backed out and fell out, had to buy new springs and screws.......

Rusty.........are we talking something as simple as the "idle adjustment screw" that is listed under the parts catalog as: Cylendar & Crank Case....Item #71 ? Just one screw to work with?

If so.........I know where this is........I just didn't think it would be this easy to fix!!

    Re: (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

I checked the link listed at the top of the board.....the only carb adjustment with a spring on it is the "Needle Valve"........is this the "Low Idle Adjustment" screw I should be adjusting outward? Or.........is it the 1 screw called the "idle adjustment screw" that will adjust ALL the carbs at once that I should be adjusting outward???? HELP...............ANYONE!

    Re: (BigSmallie II)

First off, check ALL of the idle mixture screws. They should be around 5-6 turns from seat out.... Then, if you want to raise the idle, this is done with the plastic peice that comes off of the throttle arm that goes to the timer base. Takes a flathead screw driver and a small wrecnh, loosen the nut and screw the screw inward i believe. This needs to be done sitting in the water with th boat running. WATCH OUT FOR THE FLYWHEEL.. i personally adjust it, run, cut it backoff... Hope this helps......

    Re: (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

Ok..............I think I'm understanding this now. I believe we are talking about the same thing.........but lets make sure.

When I look up my motor on the link at the top of this post (1999 Johnson 225 H.O Carb....Mod #J225HPLEEN) I find the following parts:

#1) Carburetor & Linkage, item #14, "Idle Air Bleed" (this is the small screw I tried to turn out last night...but determined that it was not meant to be turned out!!)

#2) Carburetor & Linkage, item #12, "Needle Valve" (Looks to be hidden and has a spring)

There is no mention of an "Idle Mixture Screw / low idle mixture screw" in this shop manual for my motor. So I am confused and want to make sure I am adjusting the correct screw.

I believe, because of what you are saying, it would be item #12 the Needle Valve that I should adjust 5 - 6 turns out, because this screw has a spring and is located just above the idle air bleed screw that I had loosened last night....and then tightened back up................but I did not see the Needle Valve screw last night because it is located deep in side the hole (oops........that didn't come out as clean as I would have liked )

So..........please verify that the "Needle Valve" is A.K.A the " low idle mixture screw"..........then I know I got it whipped!

    Thanks guys.............

ps: You mentioned before that this screw (Needle Valve, Low Idle Mixture, etc.. etc...) takes an alen wrench.........correct?

Do not reset the screw by turning it all the way in, just back it out one turn.
