    2003 Ficht computer problems

When I have the engine in the mode that it’s ready to run and hit the start button, the starter will try and engage for about 1/2 a second and then disengage and continues to do so as long as I hold the button down. After walking away for a minute I came back and heard something and it is my high pressure fuel pump acting the same way. Is this my computer?

What is the status of your Battery? Your description leads to a low battery.
Do you have Ranger boat by chance?

It is a Ranger. I was at the lake and had no problem starting it the first 3 times. The fourth time is when it started doing this. I thought battery also and got it home and charged. When at the lake with one of my graphs on I checked and the voltage read 11.9 and didn’t drop at all when trying to start. I have a jump box and will go try that just to make sure.

So I went and checked it with the jump box and same thing. The only thing that I did notice this time but didn’t pay attention to last time was the no oil, hot and check engine lights blinking every few seconds. Sometimes it blinks faster than others.

11.9 is low. Resting volts should be 12.5 +-. No Voltage drop while trying to start is not normal either. Battery volts will drop to 9 volts +- during cranking.
Blinking systemcheck lights are indicator of low volts.
There could be a flaky battery cable connection some where.
The Ranger push button starting is something of their design. I do not know much about it. I would recommend going around it by testing with an official ignition switch connected dirrect to the 6 wire plug on the engine. Dealers do this all the time so they don’t have to go back and forth to the helm.

I will do that. I have the switch that I keep in my toolkit in the boat. Thank you for the help. I will update when I have one. Thanks again.

Well I tried the key and it is doing the same thing. For the talk about low voltage to the motor, it was 12.4 resting and when the starter was trying to engage. I tried reading the codes it the blinking keeps changing and I think it’s one thing then I think it’s another.

You have not told us what motor you have, you only said 2003 FICHT.

If it is a V4, you may have bendix problems, worn bendix shaft bushin, or maybe a warped or damaged flywheel cover

I know someone that has a 2003 225 Ficht that was a no crank and the three lights would come on. It would start if you didn't let it go thru the system check first. If you waited for the system check to finish the fuel pumps would turn off and the three lights would come on and it wouldn't crank. It turned out to be a problem with the EMM. He sent it to DFI and they repaired it.

I got my computer back from DFI and the emm is good. While checking on things, I pulled the cover off of the pdp and the relay that controls the emm was what was clicking. I swapped it with a trim relay and the fuel pump came on like it was supposed to, but the battery was about dead with the switch being on for the long while. I changed the battery over night and it is still not right. It does run the fuel pump but sometimes it runs longer than it should. I am picking up 4new relays tomorrow to make sure but am wandering what else it could be? Does it sound like the pdp needs to be replaced? I’m out of town a lot with work and want to take advantage of time I have at home.

So have you ever had one of those I’m an idiot moments? I have. When things were being so erratic, I thought I wonder if the kill switch lanyard is not engaged all the way. It wasn’t. At all. That’s right, the kill switch was not hooked up. My question now is why was it doing anything at all? If I wasn’t getting anything that would have been the first thing I checked. Anybody ever seen this before?

Remembering this is a Ranger boat system - When the kill switch lanyard clip is not attached, the ignition system is grounded. No spark, no run.

I think since 1996 when the kill switch is pulled it should still crank after killing the engine....I have a 98 Sprint with 03 evinrude 250....if you pull the switch while running it will kill the engine.....but the engine will refire so you can go pick up a man overboard.

If using an Evinrude ignition switch you are correct.
this is a Ranger ignition switch system.
