why do johnsons use more fuel than others?

i have a Johnson 225 venom and ill get approx 1.5-2.5 miles to gallon. is it because of them being richened to keep head temps down or the weight of the engines kill fuel milage. i owned a merc also and it was around 3.5 to gallon both carbed
