    Hammond Lake Information

My buddy and I plan to come up to Hammond Lake near Wellsville for a couple days in Mid-September. We would appreciate any basic information on the lake, and a recommendation for a fisherman-friendly motel up there - many thanks.

I believe you mean Wellsboro. The lake has largemouth, smallmouth, and striper in it. It's been fishing pretty well the last few years. Largemouth in the 7 lb range. Smallmouth 5-6 lb range live there. The stripers are getting in the upper teens now.

Generally, you'll do best fishing offshore structure. There's many cribs, brush piles, tire piles, etc. This structure map will give you a starting point: https://www.fishandboat.com/Conserva...ns/hammond.pdf

There's also extensive rip rap to fish down near the dam. For the most part, not a lot of hazards to be aware of, unless you venture up into the eastern end and up into Crooked Creek. Best launch is the campground launch. If you head up to the Crooked Creek end, follow the channel markers as it gets pretty skinny with a lot of sunken logs up that way.

It's worth your while to make a trip to The Wellsboro Tackle Shack. Don and staff will be able to tell you just about everything you'll need to know and you'll be amazed at how much stuff he's got stuffed in that place. At the beginning of October the Tackle Shack holds a 3 day tournament where they fish a Tioga, Hammond, and Cowanesque over 3 days.

The nicest play to stay in the area, IMO, is the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, but I can't say it's boat friendly. Not a good parking situation. The Sherwood Motel in Wellsboro is another option. Other than that, look at Mansfield. It's a short ride to Hammond and you could try Tioga from there. Tioga and Hammond are connected by an overflow and are similar.

Rip rap on the dam is def worth checking out. Tons of bait(shad) in there and big bass. Dude above basically covered everything. Used to be grass on upper end but not sure anymore.

One of the newer hotels near mansfield are boat friendly with out side outlets.
Tioga lake is a nice lake and if they are releasing water into tioga from hammond lake fish the spillway.
    Hammond is nice also.

Sounds like good fishing. I used to drive past those lakes when I lived in Danville and needed to go to NY on work related activity but I never go around to taking the boat up there for a trip. Beautiful are for sure.

There was a high school tournament on Hammond yesterday. Winning bag was 21.89.
