Line Rub What is the culprit?

Recently, I have purchased a few new rods and reels and lined them with a new brand of line (Yozuri Floro). Sporadically I have noticed there to be about 1 1/2 " wear or rub marks" on my line. I began to start having breaks on hook sets and casts. These breaks have been well above the knot in fact it could come as far into the line as 40-50 ft. This weekend a break cost my a 5 plus fish. I originally put the blame on defective line. I then respooled six rods and sure enough it happened again yesterday on one of the newly respooled reels. I'm trying to diagnose where this is coming from being that the line is not the culprit.

Again , what happens is randomly there will appear about a 1 1/2 '" spot in the line that is worn and eventually breaks. Not sure if it is the reel or the rod eyelets or something else. Your thoughts are welcome

Rod tip or the level wind on the reel. Take q tips and swim inside them to see if you find any burrs. I'd think the rod tip may have crack or groove

That's what I would suspect too. I probably replace 2 or 3 rod tips every year due to a groove wearing in them.

Your weight can fray the line. Also if you have a backlash or just a slight overrun it will cause a link on the line and you can bet that it will snap in that spot. Be sure and re-tie often.

Do the new rods have a different hook keeper style or location than your other rods? I’ve seen line get caught and frayed by the hook keeper before.

Make a couple of casts with each rod and then start pulling the line out from the reel and look for fraying. I had a new rod that was fraying the line cause one of the guides was bad from the factory.

If the line is breaking on more than one rod/reel combo, it’s the line.

I’d grab a spool of Big Game for one and see if the same problem persists. Cheap line to give a test with.

I've been using baitcasters for almost 40 years. I had a first this past weekend. The line was rubbing the level wind...I over filled the spool in the hotel. Pulled off maybe a cast and a half of line and that fixed it. It did not fray and I did not break anything, but the reel felt "sticky". I am pretty sure if I let it go more than 30 minutes the line would have failed.

Also had this happen once. Overfilled the spool of a baitcaster a bit and the diametre of the spool with the line was bigger in the middle. The line was rubbing on the reel structure under the spool.

You might want to check the spool of left over line to see if it is smooth with no rough spots. It’s possible you got a bad spool of line.

I've seen this. Overfilled baitcasters can chafe the line. Also, it's worse on braid which can absorb water and cause it to fly out from the spool and hit the inside of the reel.

What you are describing most often is the line getting pinched between the moving spool and the side of the reel. I often see it happen with other people when there is a small loop in the reel prior to casting. For some reason, I can hear the loop when people cast and it seems that is often times the culprit. The tolerance gap in the spool to reel makes it happen on some line sizes but not others from my observation. I always have my spools loose but don’t allow them to walk side to side when casting out and it works well for me.

UGH,,, Frustration. I did my best to inspect the guides. To my eyes they seem fine, as I mentioned I respooled with new line , and I couldn't see a rub spot on the reel however the line rub still appears. The eyelets are to small to run a q-tip in them to test. I'm going to see if I reduce the line amount if that helps . I want to add that I am currently using this rod to neko style wacky worms and I tend to pop them to create bites. Maybe I should send the Rod back as well as the Tatulla

Had a baitcaster a few years back that developed a 'rough spot' on the line guide. Looked at every guide on the rod so many times and even placed reel on different rod before I found it.
