    2022 Toyota Tacoma towing capacity

Looking to buy a Tacoma with the 3.5 V6 with the 6 speed automatic transmission. This will be my everyday driver when I retire and will tow a Triton TR186. The listed max towing capacity is 6,800 lbs and I'm not sure if that is going to be enough to tow the boat. So considering what's out there is there any other mid sized trucks that you would consider or will the Tacoma get the job done.

The Taco will have no issues with that boat. I’d have to go drive a new Frontier and Ranger before buying. My last little truck was an AWD Ridgeline with a 5000 pound tow rating. It had more room inside than the other small trucks.

I pull a 21' Allison with my 2nd gen Tacoma. It does a great job. I have a 2022 tacoma ordered and expect similar results. I understand the new tundra motor is also a turboed up 3.5.

Have you added up what the rig weighs? I’d think 6800 is more than enough.

    I have a 21 4Runner which is rated for 5000 lbs. Tows a 19' 150hp 3500 lb just fine.

The big reason I asked is I currently tow with a 1 ton 3500 Silverado which is way too much truck but it's also my work truck. I was just more concerned about the stopping power with a mid sized truck.

Honestly if someone has an issue towing a 3000lb boat with a truck that’s rated for 6500lbs, that’s on the driver not the vehicle.

i tow my boat with a v6 Dodge Durango that’s rated for 6200lbs and have no issue at all. No problems stopping, emergency braking, pulling up hills, etc. been a great tow vehicle.

a guy in my club is towing an 18’ nitro with a Ford Maverick. Brought it through the mountains and didn’t have a problem

I have a '20 Tacoma double cab with the 5' bed. I pull an 18' 6" Cajun with no problems at all. Before this one, I towed with a longbed '18 double cab. Never had an issue. I would like to upgrade the trailer tho with brakes at some point. Just to help.

The Tacoma will struggle going up hill and will have poor acceleration. Other than that it will do the job. For about the same money you could buy a Tundra.

No it won't struggle and no you can't buy a Tundra for the same price.

That Tacoma is a terrible Highway ride. It hunts for gears around 55-60mph and you have to give the pedal and steering constant attention. I had a 2020 and while I enjoyed it, that Highway aspect was just too annoying and not comfortable. A modern vehicle shouldn’t drive the same exact way my 96 Toyota drove. I’ve since moved to a Ranger. I highly suggest checking out the Ranger, it rides on the Highway like a full size and it’s tow rating is higher than the Tacoma and to be quite honest, pretty much everything about it is better than the Tacoma.

The heck it won’t,lol! Good buddy of mine came up to fish last year in his tacoma. Wanted to see how it would tow, he went from a ram 1500 to the V-6 taco. Hooked up my Coral 202 and headed for the chain of lakes up over a local pass. That thing struggled like hell at 40mph. Needless to say he now owns a Tundra, not quite a Ram but close enough. The mid size truck is a weird market. Same or worse mileage as a full size, less cab room, less bed space, the ride is worse, less HP/TQ. Don’t understand why anyone would want one.

If you have or considering getting one of the 3rd generation Tacomas... You may want consider getting a tune...I have owned a 17,18 and now a 22.
I agree with the post above about gear hunting etc..Then I ran across a gentleman in my area who help write a software pkge that completely changed the way my 18 drove...His software update improved ECT mode in towing a 100%. My main reason for trying it .Pulling my 19 Xpress felt like it was much lighter..Will be looking to update the 22 soon...Also the trucks are my daily driver...I was still able maintain decent gas mileage Avg 20-22 going back and forth to work. The trucks are Stock TRD OR 4x4's If someone is interested I included a link to the website. something to think about.

Nope. My dad pulls his TR21X all over the place with his Tacoma with no issues. Granted, it does have trailer brakes but acceleration is not an issue.

My buddy has a new 2022 with 3.5 and 6 speed. $42,000 Honestly, it's a turd pulling my 1200 lb 4 wheeler and trailer. 20 mph highway. Transmission seems to want to keep the truck lugging, then shifting really high in the rpm band after its lost acceleration. Hunts for the right gear on the highway. He wishes he went with a full size truck.

I don't know why anybody asks about trucks towing on here anything short of a diesel won't pull a bass boat.

It’s not the towing but the stopping I am concerned with. I learned that the hard way pulling an 18 ft Nitro with a Bronco ll back in the day
