1987 150 GT Help. NEw PH. or machine shop and rebuild

had my ole johnny looked at for a sale possible. the 87 150 gt been running for many years. Mechanic told me compression low on one cylinder near 75lbs. Was told that the piston was starting to melt or had in the past. Other readings were doing well. But the motor still runs. Alittle confuse??? Was told the power head was bad and neeeded a new one. Yes is been around for a bit. Not looking to put alot of cash into the deal hence fising out of a new rig. But would it be worth having it honed and rebuilt or new ph. Plus cost wise would it be an easy self rebuild or mechanic rebuild
    thanks]

Either way it has to come down to get the pistons out. You are looking about $1500 bottom line and I mean bottom line for the job to be done. Check out Martins Marine in Prosperity SC they may be able to help you out.

It sounds as if the low pressure one has galled. The easiest, most economical way to approach this is to remove the powerhead, then the flywheel, intake manifold with carbs still attached. Remove front half of the block, cylinder head, and that particular rod and piston. Clean up the bore of aluminum debris, put another piston & rings on the rod and reverse disassembly. You may want to go thru the carb on that particular cylinder, checking for trash and setting the float level. This will get you back on the water without spending a fortune in the process. If the cylinder is scored pretty bad, then it will need to be bored. This will involve a complete teardown. But you may be lucky and get by the easy way. Just remove the head and do a visual, as this will tell you which way you'll have to go.
