Re: OK here is the coffee (skeeter5)

Thanks, I can use a cup this morning, was up late last night snake chasing. The youngest daughter came in about 10:30pm and told me and Trish there was snake on the front sidewalk, being the ever concerned dad I told not to bother it, as it would go away. A little later she came back in told us it was still on the sidewalk, so I went out to check and sure enough it was still there, turned out to be a copperhead. My intital estimate of its' length was somewhere between 10" and 5ft, long and this greatly depended on how close I got to it. Being the ever diligent father, I quickly armed myself with every yard tool I could find to dispatch this venemous, slithering creature. I quickly set about engaging this creature in mortal combat with it winning the first few rounds by going into a shrub and coiling around the limbs. While I was outside engaged in this life and death struggle my daughter had called the Pflugerville PD and requested that an officer be dispatched to our house, a unit arrived within a couple of moments. The officer retrieved a large catch pole (used for dogs) from his car and then came up to where I was to assist. Now I am not the brightest person by far and I am looking at this thing and see that even when the loop is constricted to it's smallest point, it is not going to secure the snake, so I return to the garage and retrieve some pruning shears with a 3ft handle. Between the two of us we begin the hunt for this creature once again, we quickly set about trying to get it out of the bush and ever so often we piss it off to the point where it strikes out at the tools we are using. We figure that this will give us the oppurtunity to get something around its' head and pull it out. Now, Trish comes up with the brillant idea to use the pruning shears to cut the shrub down which she however forgot would require someone bending down and placing the cutting end into the shrub affectly cutting the distance between the cutter and the snake down to nothing if it should decide to take this action as aggressive towards its' struggle to stay alive. I told Trish to go inside and we would handle this situation. After about 10 minutes of thrashing the bush the snake finally decides it is time to take the battle to the enemy and comes out towards us, well the tools we have in hand are too large to use for close quarter combat so I yell at Trish to come back out and get us something that we can use to pin the snake down against the ground. Well, the snake decides it is time to make a break for it and quickly leaves the shrub and heads towards the open garage door. This gave us the oppurtunity to pounce upon it and we begin pummeling it with this yard tools we have armed ourselves with it. Somehow in this frantic act of aggression we managed to miss it, and it ended up crawling into the garage underneath some shelves. The officer looked at me and said "Well you win some and you some". Now, I thinking to myself, here I come out here every day to work on the boat and I not going to have to worry about running into this thing again. Well, I decide to reach down and pull a box from the shelf and see that the snake is coiled up just a few inches from my hand. This has now become something personal between me and the snake so I am bound and determined that this situation is going to come a final end one way or another. I was able to retrieve to the pruning shears and finally able to get ahold of the snake and pulled it out of the garage. After getting it outside, I was able to get to where we could make another effort to kill it. This time we made sure we weren't going to fail, after a few seconds we were finally able to kill it. The snake ended up being 2ft in length. Not wanting to take all the credit for getting rid of the snake we decide to let Trish participate in disposing of it by holding the plastic bag we dumped it in.

Re: OK here is the coffee (davec)

The only thing that saved the snake from getting shot in the first place was the fact that we are inside the city limits. As far as being a former LEO, snakes don't care even if you are active, I got bit on the leg by a rattlesnake while chasing some cattle back into a pasture while on duty. One of the fangs penetrated the leather and I ended up going to the hospital for treatment. I need to call Chris Brewton the next time, he is an expert on snakes.

Well Dave you know you can't shoot streight when your hand is shaking And knowing Bill he is smart enough to know the shear's were much better than an injured toe
