    Helix maps load slow

I’m using a 12” Helix G4N at the console, 2023 Skeeter ZXR factory wired standard batteries. Software updated up to last release which I haven’t done. Everything works great except the older Lakemaster map chip (pre-VX). Takes several seconds to load the map when changing map views even while idling around. I didn’t notice this happening on the old 998si I used to have. Is this normal on the new units?

Well I double checked it’s actually a VX card. Really slow, even if I’m turning 45 degrees at idle it’s still redrawing and taking 3-4 seconds to redraw. Has to be a setting/setup issue, right? Am I the only one having this problem? Thanks for any helpful suggestions!

What scale is on the screen. There is a bar type scale on the bottom of the screen? The smaller number on the screen the more the map has to redraw. You may have a setting wrong for the map type or something related to the map. Or possibly some waypoints that are messed up or maybe something else that is bogging down the memory. Possibly reset to defaults and try it.

May want to check your voltage. GPS/Mapping issues are the first sign of inadequate power.

I have two Helix 12 G4N MSI at my console. I purchased the Lakemaster Premium Plus card with the Google Earth over lay. I’m running dedicated power source with 8awg wiring getting 13.1v to my units. I have tried updating both units. That card is so slow in my Helix 12’s. I still have the V3 Lake Master card, and use it when I am running. My Premium Plus is only used when graphing. I actually ran both cards on Seminole last weekend. The Premium Plus wouldn’t keep up to view my trials. It’s frustrating, but I am starting to think the Helix 12’s don’t have a fast enough processor to write the maps quick enough. Mine pretty much stays white screen when running faster than 40mph. I have to zoom so far out that it’s useless

The scale you have set for your running speed will have a hard time keeping up the more you are zoomed in. What is useless when zoomed out and what scale are you saying is too far out. If it were all Helix g4s I would think we would be hearing this problem from a large number of Helix users of the VX chips. Bob
Just as kind of a side note but In the olden days, I had the old 1197. They released a new map chip with satellite images of the land. Looked cool but it added so much data to the units memory it caused exactly what it sounds like you are seeing. I proved my theory by turning off the satellite pic’s and it got better. I erased my waypoints and it ran even better. Not the best solution ,but you could try those 2 things and if it ran faster it might validate your suspicions. I do however think it is something else or we would have more guys with those problems on their G4’s.

Not sure what that means. You have, or have not done the update???

The release notes for the latest 2.890 update include this:

    • Fixed a performance issue with Chart Zoom levels, Waypoints, and Chart Decluttering.

Maybe that would fix your issue?

    Cheers

Have not done the latest update. Seems like there have been a lot of interference issues based on threads I’ve read.

If you have the MEGA LIVE, you should do the update to find out if your LIVE is faulty so it can be replaced.

No MEGA LIVE. Except for the maps loading slow, everything else works.

Are you only running one map card in your unit or 1 map card and blank SD card? Are you storing a lot of Nav data on your unit (waypoints, tracks)? I've migrated across several generations of units (1198, H12G1, H9G3, and Helix 10G4) with the same Lakemaster card and haven't seen any consistant major difference in initial startup map loading. It does seem to slow down depending on zoom level selection.

I know.. Old thread, but Searching lead me here.
The 'low voltage' post was the solution.
Got a new battery and maps load just fine now.
    Thanks!

hmm, vx map card loads slowly on my helix G4N as well... heck half the time it reboots when I choose the map view (or a split 360/map view, which is typically what I would use). I will double check voltage but should have good power as I have 8ga running direct from electronics battery to Blue Sea panel at the bow and have no issues with 360 or LVS. Overlay is alwasy up I've never noticed any issues but will double check...
