    Couple quick questions...

I just purchased a boat with a 1998 Johnson 150 faststrike on it (mod# J150g1ec0). I'm pretty used to 2-stroke motors (dirtbikes, etc.), but have never owned an outboard before. The question I have is what is the best brand of oil to use in this motor? In past 2 stroke apps., I've used synthetic oil to reduce smoke. Also, on idle and intial start-up, the motor is puffing smoke...lots of smoke. I pulled the plugs and yes they were wet...so I'm thinking the oil injection system is turned WAY up. How would I go about checking/adjusting this?

    2) Is a bottle of fuel system cleaner recommended every tank?

    3) Being as I just bought this boat, what regular maintenance needs to be done to ensure reliable/driveablity?

    4) Should I "decarb" the motor?

    5) Where can I find a manual for this motor?!

THANK YOU so much for any and all help!!!!!!!

Hi John welcome to the boards. Yep it is normal for them to smoke on start up. No adjustment available to change that. They maybe wet from trying to start it and not letting it get to temp. Make sure your plugs are Champion QL78YC and are gapped at .030. Head temps need to be checked normal range is around 145* F on the muffs.
The VRO/OMS system supplies oil to the motor at a rate of about 50:1= 50 gallons fuel to 1 gallon oil.
Of course I am going to recommend a BRP oil XD-50 would be a good oil for your motor and cost effective. If money is no object the run the XD-100. If you have a nearby dealer then you can save a few $$ by bringing them an empty 1 gallon jug and buying in bulk. I believe Bond's marine is in your area. While you are there you can get a can of BRP engine tuner to Decarb your motor.
You can also order a manual from them as your motor's service manual is still available from BRP.

As far as regular maintenance goes, replace the lower unit fluid once every 100 hours or once a season depending on your usage. Water pump replace once every 300 hours or 3 years which ever comes first depending on water that it is used in.
Fuel additive, I'd say BRP 2+4 but not needed every tank or Stabil Marine formula or StarBrite Startron formula.
