    88 Rude 150 Low RPM's

    e150stlcga

    88 Rude 150 XP
Just got the boat, Max RPM's are 4300. Raker 24 prop.
Sluggish comming out of the hole and max rpm's trimmed up is 4300, Idles @ 900 in and out of gear... At times wants to stall at idle. The bulb is soft when running wot but pumping the ball did not help things. VRO disconnected, I cleaned the Plugs, linkage and carbs (not rebuild) fresh gas. The carbs appear to be opening fully on the muffs and will run up to 6k on the hose. Voltage meter shows 12.5-13.0 when running wot.
    Thanks for the help

Pop in a new set of Champ QL77JC4's gapped at .030 and see if it helps. Is the clear plastic sleeve on the throttle roller? Compression OK?

What size boat do you have? The Raker 24 may be too much prop. The bulb will not stay hard but should not go flat. If you continue to rev it up to 6k on the muff, you are going to blow your engine, not over 1500 on the muff.
What does the Voltage meter show at idle?

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

It helps it get full throttle.

You need to check timing too. And I would decarb it.

It is a 18' ft Stratos pro 181, The same prop I ran on my Ranger with Rude 150 XP and ran @ 5600 wot and 61.2 Gps by myself. So I should be able to turn that Raker 24 with no problem. Voltage @ idle is 12 volts. Bulb is not going flat just soft

    Re: 88 Rude 150 Low RPM's (jaqfan)

I still think the raker 24 is too much prop for you XP150, The largest prop my 1985 XP150 would turn was 21+ SST on a 1985 17'.8" Manatee run-a-bout @ 54-5600 rpms, 60 mph.
My XP is now on a 2003 19' Key West center console spinning a 19 SST @ 53-5400 rpms, 46-48 mph.
Your voltage at idle seem low to me. If you are only getting 12 volts at idle with no accessory on then I don’t think your stator is keeping up.
As for the bulb, most primer bulbs will lose some firmness when the engine is running. This is normal. The bulb should not run dry of fuel or collapse in suction, but it will tend to lose some of the hard firmness it had when initially primed.
Another consideration is Earl’s suggestion about the engine height.

    Regards,

Melvin, the bass boats will usually turn the 24 Raker or 23 Gade.

    Michael,

I will take your word for bass boats and the 24 Raker. However, if he is only getting 12 volts on his volt gauge at idle, either his battery is dead or his charging system is not up to par.
