225HO eTec idle stall & rough at 1500RPM's

Hi everyone -

2005 225HO eTec
Model E225DHLSOC
Ser #05113009
XD50

I have a '05 225HO eTec (on a Ranger Z20) that has two issues:

- persistent low-idle stall issues (more often than not when it's cold - right off the trailer, idling out of marina). If I had to guess, this happens about 75% of the time. When it's rough, it's REALLY rough (I may have to re-start it 5+ times just to get turned around and headed to the lake where I can get it off idle) - BUT there are times when it just purrs (?) which really throws me off

- for as long as I've owned it, it's had a rough spot at 1500RPM's. On a bass boat, that's not a common speed to run so it doesn't bother me that much, but it makes me wonder if that is in any way related to the rough idle above (and for the $ spent on this rig, I'd like it to run smooth at any RPM...)

The dealer told me he checked the motor over the winter, everything was up-to-date. They replaced the plugs (NOT under warranty), and the first time out I thought things were golden. But... it only took a few hours and it was back to the old story of stalling at idle.

Appreciate it if one of you guys that have access can check to see if this motor really has had the latest codes applied - or if you have any thoughts (I'm guessing deflector pins will be one of them based on prior posts).

Thanks,
Dave

Re: 225HO eTec idle stall & rough at 1500RPM's (dladue)

I have an '06 225ho and mine also idles rough around 1500 and I believe
I have read that that is normal as the motor is changing timing or something in the mapping to get ready to go to high speed. The problem with the low speed idle may be plugs. Mine use to do that when I needed
to change plugs. Good luck and please post if you get it fixed..

You have an early production motor that qualifies for the longer deflector pins, the Iridium longer life plugs, temperature checks for the thermostats and the pressure relief valve, and software updates. Make sure your dealer is up to speed on the changes and documents that they have been done. It is warranty.

Call Evinrude customer service if you are not taken care of by the dealer. 847-689-7090

There has been one claim filed for a manual release valve (trim unit), get it to your dealer and have him perform the information on service bulletins 2006-02 and 2005-05.

Have him load the latest map also, your motor will run like new again.

Re: 225HO eTec idle stall & rough at 1500RPM's (ELGIN)

Thanks all. I'll get it into the dealer ASAP for all this stuff.

I wish the dealer I had left it with (the last two winters) had done this job right the 1st time . The water is only soft up here a few months, and now I've got to deal with busy shops during the peak season. Guess I'm looking for a new dealer...

Thanks to you guys though - at least now I'll know what I'm asking for when I walk in...

my 05 did same. fouled plugs, rough at 1500 rpms( jerky)had the deflecter pins, thermostat, plugs, and cooling kit upgrades and no more problems.see your dealer.you would think that brp would send owners info on these early problems.it would cut down on headaches.

Re: 225HO eTec idle stall & rough at 1500RPM's (triton1cos)

Well said triton1cos. Why wouldn't they be pro-active on these things? Are they TRYING to drive us to a 4-stroke from some other unnamed vendor?

I've owned OMC all my life (4th one - even have a 9.9hp evinrude kicker on my Lake Ontario salmon rig) - and when the eTec's were announced, I couldn't wait to get one. But after these frustrations, I really started wondering if I made a bad choice. I was trying to run it through the right channels to get it fixed - but was getting no where.

If it wasn't for this board, I'd probably be shopping for a trade by now (with something else hanging off the back) - totally frustrated by this experience. As far as I'm concerned, OMC owes you guys a commission check for saving a customer.

Thanks to all.

Sidebar: I don't want to start any infomercials on this board but if someone has a recommendation for an eTec mechanic that's relatively "close" to Syracuse, NY I'm all ears. (I bought the boat from an out-of-state dealer but haven't made the move there yet so need someone that's good closer to home for the time being). IM me if you don't want to post to all.
Thanks.

Re: 225HO eTec idle stall & rough at 1500RPM's (EtecRanger 205)

I have a 06 e-tec 225 and I have the same problem. I got it in the shop now trying to address the stalling problem first thing on start up in the morning. I called Evinrude about the rough idle at 1500 rpm and they told me it was normal that they have a burn cnversion at that rpm and it's in a transition from idle settings to run setting.
As far as the stalling problem is I think it's an injector problem from all I can find out, Evinrude won't say anything about that. I'm having new plugs put in but don't expect that to help. Too bad the Mfg . won't come clean with all they know about the history of problems, they have had plenty of time to accumalate plenty of history by now. fishtail

Re: 225HO eTec idle stall & rough at 1500RPM's (dladue)

Just wanted to close the loop on this in case someone is out there searching this board for answers (like I often do...)

My problem ended up being solved by:

- bad fuel injector (#5) replaced
- 225HO software updates being downloaded (according to the dealer, the last codes downloaded were for a 225, NOT a 225HO)
- new iridium long-life plugs

Purrs like a kitten now. Still has the 1500RPM power-band issue, but that's not a big deal for me personally.
