    Crankcase Seal Part Number

I have decided to tackle some more maintenance on my 1990 175 Johnson (J175stlese). I was told that the crankcase seal was leaking. Well I found the leaking seal, but I can't find a part number for it. All I found was some references to a material you have to cut. That can't be the only way to buy this seal, can it? How would a leaking crankcase seal affect the motor? Would it hinder the starting at all?

Next, the motor mounts have to be replaced at the same time. Sounds like a good weekend of work. That's pretty straight forward.

The people who did the carb work told me that this motor wasn't worth the time and money to fix, but I can't seem to find a reasonably priced replacement. Am I correct in wanting to simply replace the parts intead of getting a new - used motor?
    Thanks ya'll

Dang, talk about a shopping list.

Which one of those is the crankcase seal? I want to look into that a little more.

Re: Crankcase Seal Part Number (mic0157)

From looking at the diagrams on the net, this is not where I'm seeing the gasket loose and bubbling. From lokoing at the diagrams, it appears the previous owner used a red rtv product in place of a proper head gasket.

I'm not sure if this is what is making my boat hard to start, and the plugs carbon up frequently, but something is definitely wrong with the motor and I can't figure anything else that cuold be wrong. I assume this is a time consuming motor tear down and repair, correct?

    Your thought?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Or post up the link to what you may be looking at. To replace the top seal the flywheel has to come off, then stator and timer base. Then the top main bearing. To replace the bottom seal then the motor has to come off and the lower main bearing removed.
