Two problems Evinrude 150

1993 Evinrude 150 VE150ELETG

Fished yesterday morning ran to several spots arond the lake, no problems. Went back to the ramp, tied up at the dock, got the truck, came back to the boat and the starter would not engage. I could hear the starter spinning but it was not engaging to the flywheel. Loaded the boat by trolling motor, went home, about 45 min drive. When I got home I checked to see if it was still doing the same and it fired up fine. I think the bendix?? was stuck?? Any suggestions on checking it out or fixing? or was this a fluke?


2nd problem, changed the lower unit oil tonight and discovered water, I'm thinking a seal has went bad. I have not noticed any leaks or oil seeping out. Given the age of this motor should I just get the seals changed out or should I go ahead and have a total tear down of the LU and check it all out? What should I expect to pay to have new seals put in?

The bad thing about a gearcase seal problem, It sneaks up on you without warning, sometimes after it's too late. Depending on the severity of the leak will determine when to take action. But action must be taken, or else you run the risk of destroying the internal parts. Look for fishing line at the propshaft, first thing. If none is seen, drain the fluid and do a pressure test. Most of the time, your leak will be found at the large "O" ring at the front of the carrier. This can be replaced without removing the case. If the case must be removed, you're probably in the 200.00 range for parts and labor.
