what is a 2000 envinrude ficht worth

I currently own a 97 carbed evinrude ocean pro #e225txeud with a blown gear box and a local dealer has a 2000 225 ficht that he says will bolt right on for 4000. I dont have the numbers of the motor but he says it is a nice machine with under 400 hrs and a new lower unit. I didnt no much about this motor until I did some research on the forums, but it seems like it may be a gamble. With a lot people who seem happy with theres, would it be safe to say if it has lasted this long it may be a sound engine. Just curious, would like a newer more efficient motor but brand new Etecs seem a little to far out of the price range for me.

Does 4000 seem to high. Thanks for any help

Every eight year old outboard is a gamble regardless of make. The best you can do is have them hook up on the computer and check for any codes, hours, etc., ask for a compression test on all cylinders, have them drain the lower unit in your presence and look for metal shavings. Post the model and serial number and the experts here can check the history of the motor. Appears price ok (NADA)especially if he is going to do the swap and rig for you. If you do purchase, Evinrude XD-50 w/Seafoam or XD-100 oil only. Run the snot out of it but do not use for prolonged trolling if used for fishing.
P.S. Make sure the injector bolt and strap update has been done on the motor.

Thanks for the help I know older motors are gambles but you need some deep pockets for new ones. I wouldnt need it for trolling I have a 9.9 four stroke Johnson. Thanks again I will try to get the numbers off his motor

I have been told by the local Boat shops that Some of the evinrude dealers in the Los Angles area are selling Etec 08 225HO for as low as 12K if you have that kinda cash sounds like it might be worth checkin out. Apparently they are the bigger dealers making room for 09 models
