    LTC Alabama Texas

I’ll be posting this in the Texas forum as well.

I moved from Texas to Alabama. My LTC (formerly CCW) is expiring in Texas at the end of January.

Can anyone weigh in on the advantages or disadvantages of renewing my Texas LLC vs getting a new one from Alabama? I know they are reciprocated between states. Just trying to do the right thing.

    Any thoughts?

In Alabama a pistol permit is issued by the local Sherrif's office and valid for the state and reciprocal states. The price in my county is $20 per year and can be renewed online but every 5th year requires a visit to Sherrif's office for a new photo for the permit.

If you want to be legal and get a permit for your current state of Alabama it will take about a 20 minute visit to the Sherrif's office.

Thanks for the reply. I believe I’m “legal” from either state. I’m simply trying to weigh out if I should keep the Texas one or get an Alabama one.

I don't see any downside to getting one in Alabama but if you have one from Texas use it, but can you renew it if you are no longer a resident of Texas?

When you reach the age of 65 in Alabama, the fee drops in half.

Hi Rayburn guide, Well over 20yrs here in bama in that line of work. Technically if you live in Alabama you have to have one from your local Sheriff to be legal here or any other state, as your “pistol permit” as we call them, has to be valid in your home state to be valid in any of the other states that honor it. So theres my .02 worth for what the advantages would be either way. That said I cant imagine you would have any issues if you had one from AL or TX in any state that allows them. Hope that helps!

I am over 65 and renewed about a year ago and paid $100 for 5 years. Is this something new and do you have link to info?
Edit more info in: I just looked at my county and no discount for over 65. $100 for 5 years......not bad compared to other states!

We have the $100 for 5 years but a friend who was about my current age (76) advised me not to buy any green bananas and to always eat my dessert first. I guess that could apply to buying 5 year pistol permits too

I can't speak for your county but for Shelby Co. It was the easiest thing I have ever done. I went to the satellite office, no waiting, I handed them the form, a check for 5 years ($100), and my driver's license. She said "I'll be right back". Two minutes later, she gave me a plastic permit card with my driver's license photo on it and I was on my way.
I told my wife she needed to go do it herself and see how easy it was. She still delegated it to me and I it was the same deal.
