Just like many of the other units, you can buy it with built-in sonar (943xsv) or without (943).

What is this unit meant for?
So what is the bad design on a 942? I have one and think it's a great unit. i use it for a PS 30
They should of put sonar in it .It was a either a monitor to link or had to have gt 34 Uhd .The display resolution was great and would of been a great 9 inch unit.It looks like a they fixed those issues now?
I think the 942xs was designed primarily for salt water fishermen that wanted a 9 in screen and capability for the 8 pin 1kw transducers. And it does that. But it prevented freshwater fishermen that wanted SideVu from purchasing it. The 943xsv is 12 pin and includes SideVu but will still handle the 1kw 8 pin transducers with an adapter cable. It doesn't have an 8 pin only xs verson. And the resolution is much better. Most of the GPSMAP models come in a non-sonar version. It saves a few bucks when adding a second unit to read and display off of another unit that does have sonar capabilities.
My wife asks if I'm going to fish every day. I can't fish every day. Some days I might be sick.
Looks like a promising unit (943)
I would think the resolution would be real good being a 9 inch screen.Better than the 93.
