    Boat throttle cable??

So I bought this 88 charger in near mint condition Hull. It has an 88 evinrude 175 and I got it running put new fuel in it new water pump, took out all spark plugs cleaned them (plan to get new ones) and it fires up on second crank and runs great on the muffs. Today I took it out to the lake. It was sluggish out of the hole but once finally got up on plane ran pretty well. When slowing down I almost had to bring throttle to neutral to get to idle speed. Also when in reverse it seems that it has very little power unless I mess with the throttle a little. Do throttle cables need greased? It just seems like the throttle cables not catching at times to give it the juice it needs. Compression seemed good all cylinders between 75-85.

if you havent already be sure to install a new fuel filter and install new plugs.check plug wires for cracking.after 32 years there is probably some greasing and adjustments that needs to be made on the throttle cable starting from the front to the back of the engine.may even need a new cable.i would also post this on the evinrude forum to see what other comments is out there.your compression numbers are within +/- 10% of each other but i dont know what the numbers should be on that year model evinrude.thanks good luck and good fishing
