    Help with my '71

    I was recently given a 1971 Evinrude 60 Hp 3 cly. engine (Model number: 60173C). The last time the engine ran was roughly four years ago. The engine was also given to the person i got the engine from because the original owners apparently couldnt get it running either.

    The engine will turn over but it isnt getting spark. When I origninally looked at the electrical system in the motor they had things jumped and were apparently trying to diagnose the problem. It looks like they replaced the amplifier assembly because it appears to be extremely new.

    I have replaced various parts for the ignition system including the diode and lead assembly, the coil, and the rectifier. The only two parts remaining unchanged since i have been in ownership of the engine are the above mentioned amplifier assembly and a purple gel filled peice which i believe is the clipper circuit assembly. This part appears to be in good shape (no cracks or breaks in the gel), however it is the part that was originally in the engine (you can tell by the color change of the wires).

    When I hook the battery up and I turn the key so that the power is on to the system the amplifier assembly makes a rhythmic ticking sound like a clock. I dont know if this indicates that there is something wrong with the part or if that is normal. Using a test light I also determined that there is power going into the amplifier when the key is on but not power going out of the amplifer which feeds power to the coil and from there to the spark plugs.

    I didnt have a problem buying the other parts because they were all relatively inexpensive. The amplifier assembly is 270$ and the clipper circuit assembly is 220$ so I want to be certain that I am changing them becasue they are the problem.

    Take the clipper circuit off and throw it away. It is a voltage regulator to keep spikes off the amplifier but usually it limits the power and causes the amplifier to fail. Trust what I'm telling you. Take it off and toss it. The amplifier needs consistent battery voltage (min 10.5V while cranking) to function. The points under the flywheel (set to .010 I believe) trigger the amplifier to release the charge to the ignition coil. You can unplug the wire between the amplifier and points then ground the amplifier end and spark should occur unless the amplifier is toast. The amplifier should not make a ticking noise.

    If I remove the clipper circuit do I have to jump anything or do I just remove it and leavie it at that?
