    lower unit oil capacity?

Hey all, I've got another question for ya. This time I'm armed (with information) I have a 1977 Johnson 115hp model number is 115etl775. I'm in the process of putting lower unit grease in it. I put 1.5 8oz. tubes in it and it seems full. It gurgles in the tube and when I pull the tube out, oil comes rushing out. It can't be full with only aprox. 12oz. can it? Also, how do you folks put the oil in? I couldn't find a squirt can and didn't want to go into town to get one? Any help would be really great!

That doesn't sound quite right I was thinking around at least 24-26 ounces. Most folks get the pump kit and buy it by the quart and use the pump to fill it until it comes out the top. Put in the top fill plug to create a vacuum and then remove the pump and put the lower plug in fairly quickly.

Thanks for the info, now I have a really stupid question.... Where do I get one of those pump kits? Also, I was just trying to squeeze the oil into the top hole and waiting for it to drain down and put a bit more in and so forth. So I am doing it completely wrong? Sorry, not very mechanical and mostly break things. Not fix them, but I'm trying anyway.

You can get them at Wal-Mart if you don't have a dealer near you. To service the Lower Unit, remove the upper vent plug then the lower drain/fill plug and let the fluid drain out of the bottom hole. Take note of the coloration of the fluid and also odor (burnt smell), if the oil is milky you have water intrusion in the LU. and need to have it corrected. If the oil is OK then attach the pump to the lower hole and insert the pump end into the quart bottle and pump until the fluid comes out the top hole. Its as easy as that.

When I drained the old oil, just a few drops of water came out with it. Is that normal? It's an old boat, so I don't want to dump a bunch of money into it. I haven't noticed any "burnt" smell. Just want to say thanks for the info and how much I appreciate the BBC!

Yeah a little "condensation drops" may have come out, I'm just saying if it comes out milky then you may need the LU resealed. Spend the $10.00 on a pump at Wally world and you will be set for life. No we appreciate you!!
