    Public Service Announcement - Plumbing

Am certain there are a ton of stories of leaving water on while on vacation. Did not happen to me, significantly less today but a good reminder.

7:40 or so this AM log on to start working in upstairs office, not a minute later hear what sounds like a waterfall. Thought maybe the wife had turned water in kitchen sink on full stream, yeah, I was optimistic. Not seeing her in kitchen, run down in the basement and spot water coming out of light fixture in bathroom in drop ceiling. Turn off main valve, inspect and luckily not too much water as it was less than a minute until turned off. Moved light so no more water dripped on it. Broke at joint and he found another drip. Going to get a full inspection as house is 34 years old with original pipes.

Plumber just left, Why he doesn't have a BassCat Jag with 450, towed by F350 dually King Ranch I don't know.

I had the bolts that hold the crapper tank to the bowl rust off. Every time the tank would empty on the floor, the float would let it fill again & again. Imagine if you were away for the weekend!!!!

If you turn off the water I think you should also turn off the water heater.

Consider this and some water sensors. https://www.homedepot.com/p/MOEN-Flo...-001/309096191

We turn off the water we we leave for the winter and run the pipes as empty as we can....We leave the heat on around 52 degrees and have someone check our home every week or we would shut down the heat and have a plumber clear the pipes like the folks with cabins do.

Because plumbing is probably the most simple trade there is. That fella who came out to your house probably makes $18-24/hr. Most of your bill was to pay the company overhead.

Food for thought. I go around every new years day and turn off every valve in the house. Nothing like having a leak and the valve won't work.

This and make sure you use high quality ball valves like Milwaukee Valve Co . Not those cheap knockoff gate valves.

I was outside yesterday and had my doggie pooper scooper and it was kind of.....dirty. I saw a hose bib, and just for a microsecond I considered using it to rinse the PS off. Then I remembered, do not turn it on, it's harmless like it is. I do not want to change a frostproof hose bib in the crawl space.
Sometimes they leak after sitting for a long time, then turned on and back off.

Newly constructed home three years ago. idiot plumbers used the grey plastic water lines to connect all of the faucets and one came out of it's coupling in our master bath while we were at work. Got home and it literally was a water fall in the basement. every stick of hardwood flooring on the main level had to be replaced along with the tile and sub flooring in the bathroom. Water flooded the ac vents ruing my air handler. 29,000 damages. But who turns their water off every day before going to work? Vacation definitely!

I went to put a small hook on the wall to hand some life jackets and dont you know i hit a water line. Not just any water line.....we have sprinklers in our house an this is a 6,000 psi CPVC pipe (orange) and you can only shut the water off at the street. Was only an 1/8 inch drill bit but wow water was under some high pressure. You cant just get a regular plumber to fix it. It has to be a company that has a fire sprinkler license. Took about a day and half to get someone out there and cost me about $200.

ours would have been that bad if it had ran for more than 10-15 min. Water did go down in heat vent in the kitchen. We had the base cabinets in the living room for 6 weeks

after we started putting it back together

Got home from vacation only to hear the sound of water, discovered that the valve on the hot water for the laundry room had developed a leak. Lucky for us it had only been going for probably less than 10 minutes and was only a very slight leak and was going out into the vinyl floor rather than down the wall on the inside. 30 year old house to just went ahead and replace the drain box and both valves
