I've about had all I can take with OMC...

There's only a month left of summer and I'm still waiting on BRP to send my mechanic my new ECM. Since the ECM was malfunctioning, two separate mechanics and 3 months wait time were wasted because it was impossible to figure out what was actually wrong with my boat. Multiple parts were replaced after the engine threw codes, but the problems persisted. Finally it was decided that the ECM was the problem, not the codes it was throwing. That was bad news, but I was just happy that they finally figured it out and I could get my boat on the water. Originally I was told that I could get an ECM for about $800, then I was told that I could get a remanufactured ECM for about $800, then I was finally told that there were no more remanufactured ECM's and a new one would be $1400. I reluctantly put the money aside and told my mechanic to go for it. After my mechanic talked with the BRP rep, I was informed that it would take between 4 and 6 days to get the new part back and installed. It has now been 3 weeks and BRP just keeps changing the d-mn date. IMO, the ECM should not be a part that an owner should have to worry about. If something is wrong with the ECM, the company that originally programmed it should stand by there product. At this point, I just want to get the boat in the water, make sure everything is running soundly, and then sell it so I don't have to deal with BRP again. This has been a pretty terrible way to get involved in the Bass Boating, that's for sure...

Don't know what year motor you have, but I had a 1999 Johnson and the box was bad (the second one) and it took a month to get one. They had to make one in Mexico! None in stock. As soon as I finally got it, I traded it for a new Mercury.

Have YOU contacted BRP customer service? OMC has been gone since 2001. I didn't see any model or serial number for your motor posted. Your warranty may be expired and thus you would have to pay. It is no different from Merc or Yamaha.

For future information DFI Technologies 1-866-298-1510 http://www.dfitechnologies.com/ can repair the ECM's and EMM's used in the Evinrude DI motors. The feedback on them is excellent and the turnaround is about 2 working days, so you can be back on the water in about 1 week. Without your model serial number and specifics about your symptoms we cannot help you. The question I have is the problem BRP or your dealer. I do not know of any manufacturer Marine or Automotive that that does not stand behind their product but when out of warranty the customer pays. As ChampionMan said have you talked to BRP yourself. Good luck with your problem.

Can DFI Technologies fix the ECM on older Johnson Motors? I have the infamous 1998 175 FICHT engine. Obviously the engine is no longer under warranty, and BRP has been terrible to deal with thus far. I'm going insane as the summer slips by. Thanks for your help.

Yes they can! Give them a call and discuss with them the problem the ECM is experiencing and they will let you know how long the turn around will be.
