johnson motor wont start please help

i have a 96 johnson 175 hp motor and the other day when i tried to start it and it started but died and when i tried to restart all i hear is grinding took the starter off and it spins fast is the bendix under the plastic cover on top or is the bendis suposta pop out of the starter like on a car it looks like theres a bendix or something between the flywheel and starter but afraid to take the cover off due to there being timing marks on the top of the motor case any info on this this is also a saltwater johnson motor dont know if that makes a diference thanks alot

The reduction gear and bendix are under the flywheel cover. You will need to take everything off the top of the motor to access it. BRP part # 434517 is what you need and the cost is @ $120.00, welcome to the BBC also!

Are you saying the bendix is jammed between the flywheel and starter?? If so just rock the flywheel back and forth till it drops out, or turn it over till it hits again and it will pop out.

He has to pull the cover off to get to the flywheel, the gear that rides on the pinion shaftis welded on the insideand while the starter will spin with the weld broken under the cap it won't engage and go up the shaft.

The timing wheel is keyed so you can't mess up.
