    E-tec reliability?

I need honest input from you guys please as I'm looking at a 2007 519 with a 200 e-tec and must say i'm a bit nervous considering buying the boat with this motor. I've ridden as a co-angler in BFL's with guys with the 225 etecs and they haven't had much good to say. I read where the company is good at supporting them and that is comforting. This motor only has a two year warranty with it. What are your thoughts and experiences? Thanks!

    Re: E-tec reliability? (stratosboatguy)

I love my Etec. I have run them all, and I'm not afraid of my Etec at all. I have had some minor issues (and one major) and BRP has taken care of it very well. Had the plugs changed one time, at 100hrs BRP replaced the gearcase due to "discoloration", no mechanical issues at all, at 140hrs the powerhead let go while I was at Santee Cooper. A trip to the dealer, one working week downtime, and I was back on the water with a fully dressed 08 powerhead. 40hrs on the new powerhead and so far, have only had one issue (last weekend) that they attributed to a bad tank of fuel. Guess I wasn't the only one to have issues after filling up at that station. When you figure that 140hrs on a powerhead in just a touch over a year, it tells you how much I use my rig. All that use and I have had more issues with the trailer than I have the motor...

Post the model & serial number here & the dealers can look up the motor history for you.

I"am like Grant, had very few problems (LU & got overnight service)but my 225 ho is a 2005 model with over 600 hours. It is the smoothest & quietest outboard I have ever owned. It gets very good gas mileage & hardly knows what oil is.I can go 26 guide trips on a gallon of oil.It also has all the power I will ever need.

    Re: E-tec reliability? (stratosboatguy)

You want honesty, I don't know about the 200hp but my new 115hp has had a few issues that turned out to be easily fixed with trips to the dealer. Hope your authorized service techs are close to your location and have been to the latest schools( check them out on the evinrude site, Click on find a dealer. There should be a propeller type logo next to their name.)When working properly these motors are great, But I seem to get better information from some of the folks on this site than I do from my dealer or even Evinrudes customer service. No bashing here, I would buy another in a heartbeat, I would have just purchased it and serviced it elsewhere if I had that option conveniently available. ( Do post your S/N and Mod # and someone here will be able to tell if its up to date on all of its vaccinations and boosters)... Tony, Portland, Or.

Thanks guys. The motors I've been around are the smoothest and quietest of any and under full power, seem to perform very very well. I'm certainly not looking to bash the motor at all. Just looking for reassurance. I guess i'm still hesitant after the ficht era. Thanks again!

The Ficht era went bye bye long ago. In 02 BRP started building the motors themselves with their parts and called 'em Direct Injection or DI for short. Better parts. closer tolerances, better EMM, and new injectors make the DI eons better than the Ficht. JMHO A lot of people bad mouth the Fichts, just remember that's where the new technology came from, not to mention I know people with 99 year models still running strong!!! JMHO

    Re: E-tec reliability? (Bassmeister)

while i do not own an e-tec i do know several that do & fish with them a good bit.
one freind has twin 200 ho e-tecs with over 650 hrs and not one problem. that's 1300 trouble free hours between the 2 engines.
one other freind has a 225 ho with close to 400 hrs & he had to have his emm updated ...otherwise no problems. get a certified e-tec tech to check it out for you .

    Re: E-tec reliability? (stratosboatguy)

I have run mine for almost 800hrs,offshore use,mainly....going on my 3rd season, and they are still running strong.
I had to have the updates done, and scheduled maintenance, and 1 injector replaced(rough idle).....The motors have never let me down.

    I have a 200 HP ETEC, wouldn't own anything else. Saw-weet....

Quick, quiestest motor I've ever owned, consumes extrememly low oil and NO SMOKE.

    Re: E-tec reliability? (AB)

What has been done to resolve the "bad gas" issue? Just wanted to know since I had to pay to have 20 gallons removed from the tank. Dealer said it didn't smell right. The guy that pumped it out for me said the gas was perfect. Didn't fix my problem either.

    Re: E-tec reliability? (e-tec)

I love my E-Tec. I traded in my '02 DI for it even though I had no probelms with the DI. Just wanted the latest technology, quieter, less oil consumption, and better gas mileage. My reverse went out after about 100 hrs but BRP replaced the whole lower unit without any cost or time lost. There are 3 of us in the club now with them and I'm sure those with black would like them also. The YamHammers smoke a lot (those in our club) but seem to run well. E-Tec,tick,tick,tick. Time will show those others that Evinrude still has it. Real funny thing is that I'm probably in a very very small number running an E-Tec on a Triton. It really makes that boat fly.
