    Time For A Field Trip!

Some of us BBCers are heading out this weekend for a week's fishing on Ross Barnett Reservoir near Brandon, MS. Four BBCers and 4 "aliens". If you don't hear from us ever again it was because we baked to death in the summer Mississippi heat and humidity. Temps there next week are supposed to hit 100 degrees

Gawd, I hope there is at least a little breeze

What were we thinking when we setup this little trip?

    Wish us luck!

Good luck to you, and watch out for the gators.
We had a record high yesterday of 101, and there has been very little breeze lately.

If that's the case, I'll be spending all my time up above Ratliff Ferry!

    I'll let you know!

If y'all get discouraged at the Rez, head about 80 miles northwest to Lake Washington... Consistently taking 20#+ to win tourneys each week... Then again, it IS snake grabbin' Rodeo time... http://www.lakewashingtonnewsletter.webs.com/

As an ATU grad that spent alot of time in N.W. AR... I love the Mtn Home area... Go up there every chance I get and it always feels like home... Would be happy to return the hospitality and help with the fishing any way I could if y'all get over this way... Best of luck, wherever you fish!

Love that avatar, BTW... Fooled a decent brown with some feather, fur and wire below the Norfork dam a month ago today.

Re: Time For A Field Trip! (hatcreek)

Hi Brian and thanks for the tip on Lake Washington. I'll have to check it out on the map today. We also intend to spend a day or maybe two (depending on the Rez bite) at Springwater Ranch in Johns, MS where I'm still a member. It's a private ranch with 8 small lakes including one that was stocked with Florida strain LM bass back in the early 90's. Quite a few fish over 13# caught in one of the lakes.

My email is in my profile. Cell phone is 870-404-0708. You get back up this way give me a shout. We could get together and fish the White River for trout or Bull Shoals or Norfork lake for bass. I don't have a river boat. I always wade and use my fly rod or my light spinning rod. Biggest trout so far is a 10# rainbow.

I fish Norfork lake all the time. Haven't trout fished the North Fork of the White below the Norfork dam in a couple of years. I live too close to the White. I'm only 3 minutes from the Bull Shoals dam so I always fish the Catch & Release area immediately below the dam near the golf course.

BTW, you see this rig out on the Rez next week, stop by and say hello. We can talk BBC stuff for a bit and you can point me in the direction of all the lunkers

Tell the Morrow family, Johnny Mayo said Hi ! I didn't know they had any lakes that were big enough for a bass boat. We use to fish em and skull with a paddle.

Re: Time For A Field Trip! (BrownTrout)

Best of luck to you and your group, Jim! Nice to have those private ponds to fall back on, just in case. I've got a lot of good memories of fishing farm ponds as a kid... Some of the best bass of my life

A 10# 'bow?!? You've only got me beat by 6 lbs! Can't imagine bringing a fish that size to the net on 6X tippet... Wow!

Your spot on the White is one of my favorites... And just for the record, I always wade (no river boat) too... I caught it just right in September last year... during a torrential downpour... Can't tell you (because I quit counting) how many quality fish I caught in a single little run on a green-striped 56'er... Was really upsetting to the guide and his clients who were just below that hole.

I just love being up there... When I make the trip two or three times a year, I never tell folks that I'm going fishing... I always tell them that I'm going to therapy... And that's NEVER a lie...

Will definitely give you a call next time I'm headed that way... Always great to meet another BBC'er... And my offer is a standing one... If y'all ever want to fish L. Washington, just let me know (662-820-9774)... Will do everything I can to help out.

And Johnny... You need to get up here and go fishing too

Re: Time For A Field Trip! (BrownTrout)

Final report on our road trip to MS:
    - Burgers and beer battered fries at Mug Shots was great!
    - Dinner at Bravos was great!
    - Ichiban Chinese Buffet was very good!
    - Mississippi was very, very, very hot!
    - Mississippi was very, very, very humid!
    - Fishing on RBR sucked!
    - Fishing at Springwater Ranch sucked!

We caught a few LM bass here and a few there above 43. Primarily on the edge of the pads or well up the river in the "corners" where a creek or slough joined the main river. Caught a couple in Horseshoe and some in Cane. Most were caught early in the morning and a lot were caught schooling in the middle of the creeks. Not a single fish was caught on a frog. Most were caught on a Junebug Red Zoom worm. Some were caught on a shad colored shallow running crankbait. Didn't catch a fish in Pelatchie Bay. Never fished the main lake.

Two of the guys didn't make it, so we had three boats with six anglers. Probably ended up with around 20 fish overall. Mostly short fish. Maybe 6 or 7 keepers.

Guess the poor fishing was a result of the heat wave. We came back a couple days early. Just didn't think it was worth staying longer.

I hate that for you Jim. From what little experience I have, I've found that the Rez can be tough at times during the year. At least you got some good food!

Re: Time For A Field Trip! (Bass Master)

the fishing is almost always good "somewhere" on barnett. this has been a weird year for fishing. we haven't had much water this year. the weather has been odd since january. most of the fish never staged this year. I've caught big fish the last few weeks everywhere from the very backs of the creeks to suspended over deep water in the middle of the lake. I just cant find anything consistent. you can always go above the ferry and catch a ton of small ones on a shakey head in the cuts.

dont feel bad about not catchin em right now. there are a lot of people that are really good on this lake that arent catchin em this year.

did the shad ever get going at springwater? I know someone who "claims" to have put about 5000 threadfin in there.

Caught 2 or 3 bass that were schooling in the deeper part of the lake at SWR. One spit out a mess of minnows alongside the boat and on my deck. They were very small. Maybe 2" or so on avg. I guess these were threadfin shad. Certainly not gizzard shad.

Caught a few fish alongside the pads on a Zoom worm and crawfish. Missed one in the pads on a frog. Nice blowup though

Only one other boat out on SWR the day I was there. A fellow with two of his grand kids. Talked to them as we were both leaving around noon. They said they caught a 5#, a 4# and a 3# bass. All caught on a swim jig thrown into the pads. Got my butt kicked by a 10 year old and 12 year old kids

Re: Time For A Field Trip! (BrownTrout)

i fished SWR every weekend for about 4 years. it can be a tough bite. this time of year I always caught my fish on a c-rigged tube in 9-11'. there is a big flat that is 9' and a few high spots that hold big fish. I quit fishing out there when I got a boat big enough to fish barnett.

there should be some nice looking fish in there now that there is some bait for them to eat. I always thought that guy was BS'ing me about the shad.
